Van Canto are a band from Germany that plays a musical style they call A Cappella Metal and this is a review of their 2014 album "Dawn Of the Brave" which was released by Napalm Records.
The album starts out with a choir that has a folk music feeling to it along with a symphonic background before going into a power metal style direction which has no guitars along wit h a mixture of male and female vocals. and they use their voices to imitate the instruments and sometimes they sound almost like the real thing but not quite as powerful.
As the album continues they bring doo wop elements to the music and while the music is mostly in the metal direction it also seems to have influences from other musical genres as well which adds to the originality of the recording and the only musical instruments present on this album are vocals and drums.
Van Canto have a very original sound to them and the closet genre I can relate them to is power metal and vocals are the main focus on this album with 5 different singers and while this is not a style I would listen to on a regular basis this is still a very decent sounding recording.
Song lyrics are mostly fantasy themes while a good amount of these tracks are cover tunes, while the production has a very strong, powerful and professional sound to it.
In my opinion Van Canto are a very decent sounding a cappella metal band and if you are looking for something that is very different, you should check out this recording> RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Fight For Your Life" Steelbreaker" "The Other ones" and "My Utopia". 7/5 out of 10.
