John Baizley, nate Hull & Mike Scheidt are musicians better known for their work in Yob, USX, Baroness and they team up on this album to do cover tunes of Townes Zan Zandt a lesser known country blues musician and the album is called "Songs of Townes Van Zandt Vol. II" which was released by Neurot Recordings and also has Steve Floyd, Katie Jones, and Dorthia Cottrell as quest musicians.
The album starts out with folk rock style guitars and melodic vocals as well as a small amount of female vocals and you can also hear traces of country music and after awhile finger picking is added to the recording and at times you can also hear violins in the background and on another song you can hear a small amount of electric guitars along with the female vocals returning on other songs.
On all these songs these artists pay a great homage to Townes Van Zandt and they also bringing in all of their different touches to these classic tunes as well as having a dark and melancholic atmosphere.
Song lyrics cover dark, depressive and everyday themes, while t he production has a very dark and old school sound to it where you can hear all of the vocals and musicla instruments that are present on this recording.
In my opinion this is a great sounding tribute to Townes Zan Zandt and if you are a fan of dark neo-folk and country music, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "To Live Is To Fly" "St. John The Gambler" "Highway Kind" and "If I Needed You". 8/5 out of 10.
