1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
We just came back from a 17 date adventure to support our brand new EP, "Seven Inches", released Jan 22 on Nefarious Industries. We had an awesome time on the road, and the tour was a huge success for us.
2. How would you describe the musical sound that is present on the 7 inch?
Our sound is huge, complex, loud, and minimal. Listen for yourself and I think you'll understand what I mean.
3. What are some of the themes and concepts the band brings out with the music?
Shrimp. Tits. Avocados. Calculus.
4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
We were having a hard time coming up with something memorable, and an intoxicated friend went on a rant about how crazy it would be if a fucking elephant was running at you. The idea stuck.
5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
In our 6 years as a band we've played some very very memorable shows. The Orlando show from this past tour springs to mind because we had an audience of close to 100 people all chanting "TITS" at us. In March 2011 we played a really amazing show with Smother Party, Zevious, and Dysrhythmia. Pretty much any show we've done with East of the Wall or El Drugstore can be added to this list.
6. Do you have any touring plans for the future?
We will definitely be touring again, hopefully in the summertime.
7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to the new recording by fans of underground music?
All the feedback we've received so far has been pretty positive, and I think this has a lot to do with the activity on Nefarious Industries in general, and not just our new release.
8. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?
Matt is a full time student, and AFE is his main project at the moment.
Greg is a whore and will play/tour with anyone available when AFE is on hold. Past involvements included So is the Tongue (bass, drums) and the DRX (bass). Recently he's played a few shows with Jersey City's In Musth. He's also writing music for a project of his own apparently titled "King Fuck".
9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
Who knows... we're always interested in experimenting with new ideas, instrumentation, collaboration, etc, so we'll probably get into some weird interesting territory with future releases. But we'll always remain a fucked up math duo at the core.
10.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
90's rock, Hella, Mastodon, and early Dillinger Escape Plan have always been big influences. What we're listening to these days, in no particular order:
Dysrhythmia – Test of Submission
Loincloth - Iron Balls of Steel
Schnaak – Cool Drink Town EP
Fiona Apple – The Idler Wheel…
Arbogast – I
Hazel Rah - The Africantape EP
So is the Tongue – A Child of Divorce
mOck – s/t
Eastern Anchors – Drunken Arts and Pure Science
Kayo Dot – Gamma Knife
11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Shrimp. Tits. Avocados. Calculus. Rock/paper/scissor. Hi-5s.
Matt is finishing up an Electrical Engineering degree and builds his own effects pedals.
Greg writes code for a living, travels a lot, and is an avid rock climber.
12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Nope.
Wait...
Nope.
