Alunah are a band from the United Kingdom that has been featured before in this zine and plays a mixture of stoner, sludge and doom metal and this is a review of their debut album "Call Of Avernus" which will be re-issued by PRC Music in 2015.
A very heavy bass guitar sound starts off the album before going into more of a doom metal direction and you can also hear melodies being mixed in with the heavier parts at times and after awhile the music starts bringing in more of a 70's stoner vibe along with some female vocals and after awhile the music starts to bring in a good mixture of both clean and heavy parts.
Throughout the recording you can hear a lot of proto metal influences in the bands musical style which they also update with some of the heavier elements of sludge and all of the songs stick to a slow or mid paced direction and when solos and leads are added into the music they keep the 70's rock/metal tradition alive throughout the recording.
As the album progresses the music starts adding in a small amount of psychedelic elements at times and there are also a few tracks on the recording that are very long and epic in length and while the songs have a retro vibe in the way they are performed the production gives the music more of an updated sound.
With this album Alunah brought in a very heavy and retro approach to stoner/doom metal while also bringing in the heaviness of sludge and this was only the beginning of what was going to come, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Paganism, Occultism, Wiccan and Hermeticism themes.
In my opinion this was a very great sounding album from Alunah and if you are a fan of sludge, stoner and doom metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Living Fast In Ancient Land" "Magick Lantyrn' "Circle Of Stone" and :Hermetic Order Of The Golden Dawn". 8 out of 10.
