Ice Dragon are a band from Boston, Massachusetts that plays an old school form of doom metal with elements of stoner and psychedelic rock and this is a review of their 2010 album "The burl, The Earth, The Aether" which will be re-issued by PRC Music in the year of 2014.
A stoner rock style jam starts off the album before adding in a more 70's style doom metal sound along with some melodic vocals and riffing and after a couple of minutes psychedelic guitar leads become a part of the recording, and as the album progresses acoustic guitars are added into certain sections of the recording along with a couple of ballads and they bring in a great amount of long and epic tracks.
All of the musical instruments on the recording sound very powerful and at times you can also hear small amounts of flute being utilized on the album and the heavier parts sound like they could off been recorded in the 70's and the only thing that makes it sound modern is the production and when we get more into the album psychedelic effects will make their way in at times and it really brings out the heavy retro Black Sabbath style sound this band produces and on a couple of the tracks the vocals get away from a melodic direction for a couple of minutes and add in some aggressive yet deep screams and the melodic vocals at times remind me of a mixture between Danzig and Ozzy, .
Ice Dragon have a very heavy, dark and retro doom metal sound with also brings in traces of psychedelic and stoner rock which sound even more powerful with a modern and professional sounding production and the lyrics are also very dark and cover a variety of many different occult topics.
In my opinion Ice Dragon plays a very great sounding form of old school doom metal and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Squares Inside Squares" "Hexagon Riders" and "Winged prophet". 8/5 out of 10.
