Blackdahilia Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Blackdahlia is a gothic metal band from Foggia, Southern Italy. We are: Samuela (vocals and piano), Ruggero (Guitar and Effects), Luca (Guitar), Antonio (Bass Guitar) and Ludovico (Drums).

2.How would you describe your musical sound?

Our music is strong and powerful, but also emotional and lyrical. It is like two opposite souls blending together in one.

3.According to the Reverbnation page, the band started out as an acoustic duo, what was the decision behind hiring a full band and going into a heavier direction?

No big deal at all: we were two, we started in two. We have always planned to enlarge the line-up and play heavy music, and so we did as soon as we got the chance. We still like the acoustic sound and we enjoy performing acoustic shows from time to time, but our soul is and has always been heavy.

4.Can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Our lyrics take inspiration from life and experience. We all feel pain, anger and frustration that need to come outside somehow, so we can heal: it is a physiological need. I would say that music is the best way we have to heal ourselves.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Blackdahlia'?

It is an oxymoron: the dahlia is a flower and it's usually white. Our music is delicate and ethereal, but dark and strong at the same time: just like a dark flower with strong roots which keep it firm into the ground, holding up against the storm. That's why the name "Blackdahlia" sounded perfect for us.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Our stage performance is exactly how you would expect it: a harmonic blend of powerful and ethereal sounds. Among our best shows, I would definitely mention the Monterotaro Rock Festival where we opened for the Rezophonic project led by Mario Riso, featuring an outstanding Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil!

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album/

At the moment we are considering different options for a small tour through Italy/Europe. If you want to keep up to date with our shows, visit our facebook pagewww.facebook.com/blackdahliaofficial or our website www.blackdahliaofficial.com

8.The new album came out on Aereasonica Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

We think it is one of the best independent labels in Italy, featuring great bands and artists. The people are cool and professional, and so far we are very happy with their work.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of gothic metal?

I would say that, so far, we have received much more appreciation from abroad than from Italy. But we kind of expected that, the Italian audience is a bit weird when it comes to rock/metal music, so we were prepared. Or they're 100% into mainstream pop, totally closed towards heavy music, or they are totally in love with rock or metal but only as far as it comes from any other country but Italy (and, in many cases, only when it comes from the 80’s/90’s and not any later!). And this is a shame, because there are so many talented Italian bands and artists that they don’t even care to know. Our fans and followers are mostly from Northern and Eastern Europe, and lately we are also receiving much appreciation from Latin America.

10.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

We don’t make plans, we will go where our music brings us. The next album will most likely be a natural evolution of Fragments, probably - hopefully - even better, because in music you never stop growing and that’s the only plan we have. We will soon start working on our next album, we can’t wait to hear how the new songs will turn out!

11.What are some bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

The members of the band have quite different musical tastes and come from quite different music backgrounds and experiences. Ludovico and Antonio come from the local stoner scene, Luca is mostly a folk/southern/acoustic rock lover, Ruggero and I are very eclectical, spacing from Nu and Alternative Metal to mainstream rock, going through almost all rock and metal sub genres (except the most extreme ones). Furthermore, I am a classical-trained pianist and I will always be in love with classical music.

12.Do you have any non musical interests?

Probably not :)

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Support the underground scene, because music is not only the big names and the majors. There’s so much more yet to be discovered, and such great artists who don’t have much exposure, but who are really talented and worth listening to!
And also, many thanks to all of our supporters, we love you so much!
