Darker Half are a band from Australia that has been featured before in this zine and plays a mixture of power and thrash metal and this is a review of their self released 2014 album "Never Surrender".
An old school thrash metal sound starts off the album along with some melodic power metal vocals which also have an aggressive edge to them at times and the music starts becoming a mixture of power and thrash as well as adding in some 80's style guitar leads and there is also a good amount of melody being utilized in the guitar riffing and solos.
The music goes for a very old school style of power/thrash metal but with a more modern day production and they remain in this direction from beginning to end taking the melody of the German power metal bands and mixing it with the heaviness of the american power/thrash metal bands as well as having a heavy Judas Priest Painkiller era influence in their musical sound and on of the later tracks has a slight black metal feeling in the guitar riffing before returning back to their heavy and melodic sound.
All of the musical instruments on the album have a very powerful sound to them and there are also some back up gang shouts being added into the songs at times as well as a small amount of symphonic and prog rock elements being used on a couple of the tracks and as the album progresses acoustic guitars are added into certain sections of the recording while the main focus remains on a heavier and harder sound.
Darker Half remain true to their power and thrash metal mixture of previous recordings and creates on album that is very old school and melodic yet very heavy all at the same time, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and real life themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Darker Half and if you are a fan of power/thrash metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Nemesis" "Stranger" "Blinded By Darkness" and "Anthem For Doomed Youth". 8 out of 10. .
