Wizard Rifle are a band from Portland, Oregon that plays a mixture of stoner, doom metal, sludge and math rock and this is a review of their 2014 album "Here In The Deadlights" which will be released on October 28th by Seventh Rule.
Clean playing starts off the album and it gives the recording more of a psychedelic feeling along with some sound effects and after a few seconds drums start to kick when and they also lead to more of a heavier and melodic musical direction and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and the band also brings in a few very long and epic in length songs.
When vocals are added into the music they bring a very melodic yet aggressive sound to the album mixing the melody of stoner rock with the aggression of sludge and there is also a good mixture of both clean and heavy parts present throughout the recording and as the album progresses the band starts adding in more elements of surf, punk and noise rock into their musical style.
All 5 of the tracks have a very different sound to them and on the 3rd song the band starts to add in more elements of doom metal and 70's rock as well as adding in some guitar solos and leads that are very melodic yet retro sounding at the same time but with a more modern take on the genre
Wizard Rifle creates some very original sounding music with their sound taking in the heaviness of sludge and doom metal and mixing it in the energy of surf, stoner, punk and noise rock as well as the psychedelia of 70's rock along with the modern day elements of math rock to invent a musical sound of their own, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and gloomy themes.
In my opinion Wizard Rule are a very great sounding psychedelic mixture of stoner, doom metal, sludge and math rock and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Buzzsaw Babes" and "Beastwhores'. 8 out of 10.
