Massachusetts's Ice Dragon have returned with a new recording that continues the psychedelic approach to stoner/doom metal of previous recordings while also addign in more progresive and acid rock this time around and this is a review of their 2014 album "Dream Dragon" which was released by PRC Music.
A very 70's orientated psychedelic rock sound starts off the album along with some acoustic guitars and melodic vocals and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and on the second track the music starts getting more heavy and adds in more of a doom and 70's proto sound.
The solos and leads that are used on the recording are in more of a 70's metal/classic rock musical direction and they also bring in a brief acoustic piece before going into more of a power ballad orientated direction on the following song and the track also introduces spoken word parts onto the recording.
AS the album progresses drones and acid rock influences are mixed in with the bands 70's style of psychedelic metal and there are also some instruments on the album as well as the band bringing in a good mixture of both acoustic and heavy parts and the album focuses less on doom metal and goes more for a progressive rock direction on the later songs.
Ice Dragon keeps the doom and stoner metal elements of previous recordings but add in more psychedelia, acid and progressive rock influences to create an album that would be perfect to listen to on pot, acid or mushrooms with their trippy and laid back approach, the production sounds very old school yet professional at the same time while the lyrics cover darkness and mythological themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ice Dragon and if you are a fan of stoner, doom metal and psychedelic rock, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Dream Liner" Stumble Upon Magic" "Beard of Thieves" and "Dream Dragon". 8 out of 10.
