The Black Rook are a band from Brazil that plays a very traditional form of metal and this is a review of their self titled and self released 2014 album.
A very hard and heavy sound starts off the album along with some melodic vocals and the music goes for an early 80's style of heavy metal and also has some old school sounding guitar solos and leads as well as the band bringing a more updated take to this genre and some of their slower riffing has a doom metal feeling to them.
There is a good amount of slow, mid paced and fast parts being utilized throughout the album and the music has a more darker edge than a lot of traditional metal and you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording and some of the later tracks also see the band updating the 70's hard rock and heavy metal sound.
As the album progresses you can hear a small amount of 80's progressive metal influences being thrown into the music but done in a more heavier fashion and some of their chorus's have the catchy hooks of more 80's orientated radio metal and after awhile acoustic guitars can be heard in certain sections of the recording as well as a brief use of symphonic elements while the main focus remains on a hard and heavy musical sound and the band also adds in a few long and epic tracks.
The Black Rook remain true to an 80's style of metal from beginning to end of the recording while also having a more updated and modern take on the genre, the production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover reflections about human being condition, his place in the comtemporaneity and the consequences of men stay in the world.
In my opinion The Black Rook are a very great sounding heavy metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Checkmate" "Forget My Name" "I Am" and "Dark Disease". 8 out of 10.
