Dog Eat Dog are a band from new jersey that mixed metal, hardcore and hip hop before it was trendy and this is a review of their 1993 album "All Boro Kings" which was released by Roadracer Records.
The album starts out with a saxophone before bringing in funk style bass guitars which leads to a heavier direction along with vocals that mix hardcore and rap together along with some clean singing.
As the album continues you can hear some punk and NYHC influences making their way into the music as well as the guitars and drums speeding up at times while also keeping around the saxophones as well as some east coast style rapping and on some songs they bring in a small amount of record scratching, clean playing and melody.
While I was never a big fan of this style I felt Dog Eat Dog where one of the better bands fro this style and their mixture of metal, hardcore and hip hop was a bit more heavier and less mainstream then t he other bands that took this style and commercialized it enough for the radio and this recording was a huge influence on what later became nu metal or rapcore.
Song lyrics cover the social and political themes of the early 90's, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy and professional sound for the time it was released and you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.
In my opinion Dog Eat Dog where a very decent sounding mixture of metal, hardcore and hip hop and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "If These Are Good Times" "Pull My Finger" "What Comes Around" and "World Keeps Spinnin". 7/5 out of 10.
