This is a review of a double split album between Japan's Boris and Merzbow called "Gensho" which was released by Relapse Records and we will start off the review with Boris a band that plays an experimental form of metal/rock.
Their side of the split starts out with avant garde field recording and clean playing as well as some synths that also bring in elements of ambient and psychedelia and after a minute heavy guitars and melodic vocals are added onto the recording and the guitar leads also use a great amount of melody and also bring in a touch of post rock.
Most of the tracks on t heir side of the split are very long and epic in length and psychedelic elements can also be heard at times along with some harsh noises and power electronics and on some songs the vocals bring in aggressive screams and one song brings in a brief use of female vocals and there whole side also sticks to a slow musical direction from beginning to end.
Boris plays a musical style that takes drone, experimental and noise and mixes it with metal to create a style of their own, the production sounds very professional on their side of the recording while the lyrics cover dark themes.
In my opinion Boris are a very great sounding mixture of drone, experimental, noise and metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band and their side of t he split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Huge" and "Vomitself".
Next up is Merzbow a solo artist that has been creating harsh noise and power electronics for more than 30 years.
His side of the split starts out with harsh power electronics and noises which also get very diverse and brutal at times and all 4 of his tracks are very long and epic in length and the loops also give the music more of an atmospheric and brutal sound and all of the songs are instrumental and sound very different from each other and the music is all done on electronic devices and ranges from being very calm to brutal and the production has a very raw yet powerful sound.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Merzbow and if you are a fan of his work, you should enjoy his side of t he split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Planet Of The Cows" and "Prelude To A Broken Arm".
In conclusion i feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of experimental, metal and harsh noise. 8 out of 10.
