Pyres are a band from Canada that plays a very progressive form of sludge metal with elements of hardcore and this is a review of their 2014 album "Year Of Sleep" which was released by Medusa Crush.
A very dark and atmospheric sound starts off the album before going into more of a heavier musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of melody and after a minute aggressive vocals are added into the music and they also bring in elements of hardcore and groove metal and when solos and leads are added into the music they bring in a decent amount of melody and 70's rock influences into the bands musical style.
You can hear quite a bit of the southern metal sound of the 90's in the bands musical style at times and a few of the tracks are long and epic in length, as the album progresses acoustic guitars can be heard in certain sections of the recording and the aggressive vocals also add melody into their approach at times along with a small amount of clean singing while the main focus remains more on the heavy and aggressive side of things and on the last track a small amount of crust and d beat elements are added into the music.
Pyres plays a style of sludge metal that is very heavy and melodic yet progressive all at the same time along with a touch of post hardcore being added into to give the music a more updated feeling, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark and philosophical themes.
In my opinion pyres are a very great sounding progressive sludge metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Deserter" and "The Everbearing". 8 out of 10.
