Verdun are a band from France that has been featured before in this zine and plays a mixture of sludge metal and hardcore and this is a review of their 2016 album "The Eternal Drift Canticles" which was released as a joint effort between Head Records, Throatruiner Records and Lost Pilgrims Records.
Atmospheric sounding drones start off the album which are also done by synths and after awhile the music starts to get more heavy and goes for more of a sludge and doom metal style while also mixing in melodic riffing while the vocals start out with more of a clean singing approach as well as mixing them in with screams.
Elements of hardcore can be heard in the vocals at times and they also mix clean playing in with the heavy parts in some parts of the songs and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and all of the tracks are very long and epic in length and the solos and leads are done in a very dark and melodic fashion and some songs also bring in spoken word samples and clean playing and the whole album also sticks to a very slow musical direction from beginning to ending of the recording.
Verdun creates another recording that takes the slowest styles of doom and sludge metal and mixes it with hardcore to create some very dark yet heavy music, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark, depressive and mythological themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Verdun and if you are a fan of sludge, doom metal and hardcore, you should enjoy t his album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Self Inflicted Mutilation" and "Jupiter's Coven". 8/1 out of 10.
