Grifter are a band from England that plays a stoner mixture of metal and rock and this is a review of their 2014 album "Return Of the bearded brethren" which will be released in August by Ripple Music.
Drum beats start off the album before 70's style rock guitar riffs make their way into the music and a few seconds later heavy bass guitars and melodic vocals make their presence known and after awhile the band starts adding in the heaviness of metal into their musical sound. and the guitar solos and leads enhance the retro rock styling's this album creates.
There are also a good amount of 90's influences being mixed into the bands musical style and you can hear a bit of Clutch, Coc, Down and Monster Magnet in their musical sound along with a good amount of modern stoner rock elements and some of the later tracks sees the band adding in more clean playing and slide guitars which brings a more blues rock orientated feeling to the bands musical style which is also mixed in with their heavier material as well and the last track is a cover of Black Sabbath's Fairies Wear Boots".
Grifter play a style of stoner rock that has some of the heaviness of doom metal and while their musical style is not very original they still write some very great sounding songs for this musical genre, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover drinking and anti religion themes.
In my opinion Grifter are a very great sounding stoner rock/metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "She Mountain" "Bow Down To The Monkey" "Fire Water" and "Return Of The Bearded Brethren". 8 out of 10.
