Tarja Turenen and Mike Terrana 2 former members of Nightwish team up together and bring in a mixture of classical composition's and traditional rock and metal songs sewn together by an orchestra and choir and this is a review of their 2014 double album "Beauty & The Beast" which was released by Armoury Records.
A classical and symphonic orchestra starts off the album along with some heavy metal style drumming and all of the music is recorded live with the first 2 songs being Bach covers and the second song brings in some melodic operatic female vocals which are also used on the 3rd track which is also a Strauss cover.
As the album progresses the drums and opera vocals start taking turn on the later songs and the 4th and 5th track is done with drums and are Rossini and Dvorak cover's and on the following song Tarja makes a return and also does her own version of a Dvork song as well a s doing Lehar and Puccini covers before going back to the drums along with an Offenbach cover before going back to vocals with a Leonard Bernstein cover and then the remaining songs alternate between drums and vocals and some of the covers that are done are Rossinni and Strauss again along with a Mozart cover closing the first disc.
On the second disc the covers are more in the rock, metal and pop music direction while alos having a classical orchestra playing most of the music with the first track being a vocal version of a Queen song and on the later tracks Mike and Tarja team up together and do cover's of Tarja's solo work along with a Led Zeppelin medley along with some Nightwish and Frank Sinatra cover's.
Tarja Turenen & Mike Terrana have a very different sound on this album with most of the music being far away from the metal category except for the Nightwish and Tarja cover's and the symphony plays all of the cover tunes very well as well as creating a very decent and different sounding album and the production sounds very professional.
In my opinion this is a very great sounding double album from Tarja Turenen & Mike Terrana and if you are a fan of Nightwish, Tarja's solo work, symphonic, opera or classical music, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "New World Symphony" "I Feel Pretty" "Witch Hunt" and "I Walk Alone". 8 out of 10.
