Coven 13 are a band from Detroit, Michigan that plays a mixture of traditional doom and heavy metal and this is a review of their 2013 album "Destiny Of The Gods" which was released by Shadow Kingdom Records.
"Thor's Twin" begins with nature sounds before the clean guitars start kicking in and then the melodic guitar riffs, bass and drums kick in along with some melodic clean singing vocals which also leads to the music getting a little bit heavier and after a couple of minutes there is a brief use of dark and melodic guitar solos and leads.
"Winds Of Revelation" begins with some heavy guitar and bass riffs along with some drums which lead up to some traditional heavy/doom metal vocals and after a couple of minutes the vocals start adding in shouts along with some NWOBHM elements which also lead up to some melodic guitar solos and leads.
'Elfstone" begins with some powerful bass guitars which lead up to some drums and old school melodic guitar riffing and then the vocals start kicking in and midway through the song there is a brief use of early 80's style metal guitar solos and leads which also lead to the riffing getting more darker along with some doom metal elements and the song closes with some nature sounds.
"Walpurgisnacht" begins with some heavy, dark and melodic guitar and bass riffs along with some drums which lead up to some vocals and throughout the song they utilize some power metal elements and towards the end there are some guitar solos and leads being utilized.
'Isle Of Man" begins with some heavy and mid paced guitar riffs and drums which lead up to some melodic and gothic sounding vocals which also utilize some heavy metal style vocals and then some dark and melodic sounding guitar solos and leads make their way into t he song.
"Frost Giants" begins with some heavy guitar and bass riffs which lead up to some drums and speed metal style riffing and then the vocals start kicking in and after a minute the music starts slowing down for a few seconds before speeding up again and adding in some guitar solos.
"Witches Kiss" begins with some heavy and melodic guitar riffs, psychedelic keyboards and drums which lead up to some vocals kicking in and midway through the song there are some classic rock/metal guitar solos and leads being utilized.
'She Rides the Dawn" begins with some heavy and old school metal guitar and bass riffs along with some drums and then the vocals start kicking in and after awhile there are some guitar solos and leads being added to the song.
"Solitary Days" begins with some heavy and dark guitar riffs along with some drums and then t he melodic vocals start kicking in and after a couple of minutes guitar solos and leads are brought into the song and they come in and out of the song and halfway into the song t here is a brief use of clean sections before the music starts getting heavy again.
"Spellbound" begins with some d ark and melodic guitar riffs and keyboards which lead up to some vocals, bass guitars and drums before going into a mid paced direction and there are no guitar solos or leads present on this song
Song lyrics cover Norse Mythology, Fantasy, and Occult themes, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy, dark, old school and professional sound where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.
In my opinion Coven 13 are a very great sounding hybrid of traditional doom and heavy metal and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Thor's Twin" "Walpurgisnacht" "Frost Giants" and "Solitary Days". RECOMMENDED BUY.
