The Judge/Tell It To The Judge/Ripple Music/2017 CD Review

  The  Judge  are  a  band  from  St.  Louis,  Missouri  that  plays  a  mixture  of  progressive,  psychedelic  and  stoner  rock and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Tell  It  To  The  Judge"  which  was  released  by  Ripple  Music.

  70's  influenced  proto  metal  style  riffs  start  off  the  album  while  the  music  sounds  very  modern  with  the  stoner  rock  elements  and  after  awhile  clean  vocals  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  the  energy  of  punk  rock.

    When  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  remain  very  true  to  a  retro  style  and  as  the  album  progresses  psychedelic  and  progressive  elements  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  one  of  the  tracks  also  brings  in  clean  guitars  and  some  of  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  touch  of  doom  metal  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  direction.

  The  Judge  plays a   musical  style  that takes  70's  psychedelic  and  progressive  rock  and  mixes  it  in  with  a  modern  style  of  stoner  rock  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  The  Judge  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  psychedelic,  progressive  and  stoner rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Empty  Halls"  "Changing  World"  "High  Flyin"  and  "Parade  Of  Sin".  8  out  of  10.    

Emptybrook/Self Titled/2017 EP Review

  Emptybrook  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2017  ep.

  A  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  elements  of  stoner  rock  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  aggressive  sludge  style  screams  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  and  the  music  also  brings  in  the  heaviness of  doom  metal.

  All  of  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  direction  while  one  of  the  tracks  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  give  the  songs  a  retro  feeling  without  losing  it's  modern  touch  and  the  music  always  sticks  to  a  very  heavy  musical  style  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also  used  briefly.

  Emptybrook  plays  a  musical  style  that  mixes  sludge  and  doom  metal  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Weed  Smoking  and  everyday  life  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Emptybrook  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Grand  King  Of  Fuckery"  and  "Hit  The  Wall  Or  Hit  The  Ground".  8  out  of  10.

   

Sapata/Satanibator/Inverse Records/2017 CD Review

  Sapata  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  heavy  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Satanibator"  which  was  released  by  Inverse Records.

  Atmospheric  soundscapes  and  nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into more  of  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  where  you  can  also  hear  all  of t he  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  while  the  female  vocals  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  traditional  feeling  while  also  being  very  melodic.

  While  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  it  still  sounds  very  modern  at  the  same  time  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion  and  when  clean  playing  is  utilized  it  gives  the  music  more  of  a  70's  blues  rock  feeling  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  briefly  it  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  as well  as  showing  a slight  black  metal  influence  and  as  the  album  progresses  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Sapata  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  heavy  and  doom  metal  and  mixes  them  together  with  some  modern  influences  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Egypt,  Occultism,  Darkness  and  Depression  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Sapata  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  heavy  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Styx"  "Sex  Magic"  and  "Full  Power".  8 out  of  10.

Zaum/Eidolin/I Hate/2016 CD Review

  Zaum  are  a  band  from  New  Brunswick,  Canada  that  plays  a  very  psychedelic  form  of  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Eidolin"  which  was  released  by  I  Hate.

  Melodic  yet  ritualistic  chanting  starts  off  the  album  while drones  and  folk  instruments  are  also  used  at  times  and  after  a  few  minutes clean  playing  is  added  onto  the  recording  which  also  leads  to  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  where you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

  Vocals  are  mostly  clean  traditional  doom  metal  style  vocals  while  both  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  and  after  awhile  the  music  gets  more  psychedelic  along  with  some  female  vocals  also  being  used  briefly  and  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  esoteric  feeling  and  on  the  second  track  natures  sounds  are  used  briefly  and  both  of  the  songs stick  to  a  very  slow  musical  direction.

  Zaum  plays  a  style  of  doom  metal  that  is  very  psychedelic  and  ritualistic  sounding,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while t he  lyrics  cover  Ancient  Middle  Eastern  and  Mesopotamia  themes.

   In  my  opinion  Zaum  are  a  very  great  sounding  psychedelic  doom  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Influence  Of  The  Magi".  8  out  of  10.

  

Montgolfiere/The Fall/PRC Music/2017 CD Review

  Montgolfiere  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  progressive  and  psychedelic  form  of  stoner  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "The  Fall"  which  was  released  by  PRC  Music.

 Spoken  word  samples  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  and  drum  beats  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  leads  up  to  a  more  heavier  stoner  and  proto  metal  style  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  also  making  their  70;s  influences  sound  a  lot  more  modern.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  retro  feeling  and  after  awhile  psychedelic  and  progressive  rock  elements  also  make  their  presence  known  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  clean  female  singing  along  with  some  male  vocals.

   The  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  and  organs  and  jazz  influences  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  a  later  track  introduces  pianos  onto  the  recording  and  some  of  the  tracks are  very  long  and  epic  in  length and  as  the  album  progresses  acoustic  guitars  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  one  of  the  tracks  is  an  instrumental.

  Montgolfiere  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  psychedelic  and  progressive  style  of  stoner  rock  from  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Montgolfiere  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  psychedelic  and  progressive  stoner  rock,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Clouds"  "The  Search"  and  "Split  In  Vain".  8  out  of  10.  

Wendigo/Initiation/2016 EP Review

  Wendigo  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  mixture  of  blues  and  stoner  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2016  ep  "Initiation".

  Hard  and  heavy  guitar  riffs  start  off  the  ep  and  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  70's  hard  rock  and  heavy  metal  feeling  along  with  some  vintage  blues  rock  style  solos  and  leads  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  a  clean  stoner  style  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

  While  the  music  has  its  roots  in  the  70's  it  still  sounds  very  modern  at  the  same  time  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  the  energy  of  punk  rock  and  you  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  melody  in  the  guitar  riffing  and  all  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction  and  the  last  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Wendigo  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  blues,  stoner  rock  and proto  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  real  life  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Wendigo  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  blues  and  stoner  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Sail  On".  8 out  of  10.  

Shepherd/Death by Fungi/Inspirus Records/2017 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  India's  Shepherd  and  Death  By  Fungi  which  will  be  released  on  August  15th  by  Inspirus  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Shepherd  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  heavy  rock,  stoner,  doom  and  sludge  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out with  spoken  word  samples  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  direction  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  vocals  being  a  mixture  of  clean  singing  and  aggressive  screaming  style  shouts.

  A  great  amount  of  sludge,  doom  and  stone r rock  elements  can  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  giving  the  songs  more  of  a  retro  feeling  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  elements  of  punk  and  noise  rock  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  Shepherd plays  a  musical  style  that  mixes  punk,  noise  rock,  stoner  and  sludge  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of t heir  own,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  real  life  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Shepherd  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge  and  heavy  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Agents  Of  Nihil"  and  "Weed  Dealer".

  Next  up  is  Death  By  Fungi  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  hardcore  and  punk.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  distorted  amp  sounds  and  drum beats  before  adding  in  hardcore  style  riffing  and  aggressive  vocals  while  the  songs  also  mix  in  the  energy  of  punk  rock  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  and  90's  while  also being  very  modern  at  the  same  time.

  Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  blast  beats  along  with  chaotic  guitar  leads  are  also  used  briefly  which  also  have  their  melodic  moments  and  elements  of  post  hardcore  are  also  used  at  times  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  elements  of  emo  are  added  on  the  closing  track.

  Death  by  Fungi  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  a  traditional  style  of  hardcore  and  mixes  it  with t he  energy  of  punk  rock  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  violent  and  angry  themes.    

  In  my  opinion  Death  By  Fungi  are  a  very  decent  sounding  hardcore  punk  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Edgelord  Beatdown"  and  "Buzzard  Murder".

  In conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  decent  sounding  split  and  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  sludge  and  hardcore  punk.  7/5  out  of  10.
