Poseidon/Prologue/Ripple Music/2017 CD Review

  Poseidon  are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  with  a  touch  of  noise  and  drone  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Prologue"  which  will  be  released  on  July  21st  by  Ripple  Music.

  Distorted  drones start  off  the  album  and  after  a  few  seconds  drums  and  bass  guitars  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  clean  playing  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  after  awhile  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavier  sludge  and  doom  metal  direction  and  the  vocals  are  done in  a  melodic  style.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  fashion  and  after  awhile  the  vocals  start utilizing  more  aggressive  screams  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  acoustic  guitars  being  introduced  on  one  of  the  songs  along  with a  brief  use  of  slide  guitars  and  spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  a  very  slow  musical  direction.

  Poseidon  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  sludge  and  doom  metal  along  with  some  touches  of  noise  and  drone  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  anti religion  themes.

  In my  opinion  Poseidon  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  with  some  touches  of  drone  and  noise  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED TRACKS  INCLUDE "Mother  Mary  Son  Of  Scorn"  and  "Omega".  8  out of 10. 

Olde/Temple/Medusa Crush Recordings/2017 Cassette Review

  Olde  are  a  band  from  Ontario,  Canada  that  plays  a  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge,  and  doom metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Temple"  which  will  be  released  on  cassette  in  August  by  Medusa  Crush  Recordings.

  A  very  hard  and  heavy  stoner  rock  influenced  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  the  riffs  also  mixing  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  more  of  an  aggressive  sludge  style  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion.

  A  decent  amount  of  melody  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  and  at  times  the  vocals  have  a  very  rough  yet  somewhat  melodic  edge  to  them  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  bring  in  a  very  melodic  stoner  metal  style  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  sticks  either  to  a slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

  Olde  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Olde  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Subterfuge"  "Temple"  and  "Castaway".  8  out  of  10.

Dead Is Dead/Constraints Of Time/Triple Eye Industries/2017 CD Review

  Dead  Is  Dead  are  a  band  from  Wisconsin  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge  and  post  metal and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  alum  "Constraints  Of  Time"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Triple  Eye  Industries.

  Atmospheric  sounds  and  clean  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  album  and  drones  are  also  used  briefly  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  musical  direction  along  with  some  vocals  that  are  very  aggressive  in  almost  a  spoken  fashion  bordering  on  hardcore  while  the  riffs  mix  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  metal.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful sound  to  them  and  clean  singing  is  also  used  at  times  while  the  solos  and  leads  bring  in  more  of  a  melodic  post  metal  style  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  while  clean  guitars  are  also used  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  along with  some  aggressive  screams  also  being  used  at  times  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or mid  paced  direction  as well  as  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  stoner  rock  elements.

  Dead  Is  Dead  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  sludge  and  post  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark and  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Dead  Is  Dead  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge  and  post  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "No  Longer,  No  Longer"  and  "Earth  As It's  Slowly  Consumed  By  The  Sun".  8  out  of  10.

Toro/Departure/2017 EP Review

  Toro  are  a  band  from  Atlanta,  Georgia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  progressive,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of t heir  self  released  2017  ep  "Departure".

  Distorted  amp  sounds  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  aggressive  screams  a  few  seconds  alter  which  also  leads  up  to  a  heavier  sludge  metal  direction  which  also  brings  in  a  decent  amount  of  melodies  at  times  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  along  with  some  prog  elements.

  A  lot  of  the  slow  riffing  also  mixes  in  elements  of  doom  metal  and  clean  playing  along  with  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  when  melodic  vocals  are  utilized  they  add  a  touch  of  stoner  rock  to  the  bands  musical  style  and  whispers  are  also  used  briefly  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  long  and  epic  in  length  and  on  the  closing  song  stringed  instruments  are  added  onto  the  recording.

  Toro  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  prog,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Toro  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  prog,  sludge,  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "This  Hell  Is  Real"  and  "When  The  Light  Calls".  8  out  of  10.   

Ether/There Is Nothing Left For Me There/Dead Truth Recordings/2017 CD Review

  Ether  are  a  band  from  Fort  Lauderdale,  Florida  that  plays  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "There Is  Nothing  Left  For  Me  There"  which  will  be  released  on  July  7th  by  Dead  Truth  Recordings.

  Distorted amp  drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  record  player  samples  and  after  the  intro  goes  into  a  heavier direction  along  with  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  very  aggressive  and  mix  hardcore  and  sludge  together  and  some  of  the  tracks a re  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Clean  singing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  violins  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  steel  and  acoustic  guitars can  be  heard  on  a  few  of  tracks  and  they  also  give  the  music  a  more  southern  feeling  and  there  are  also  a  couple  of  instrumental  tracks  and  a  later  song  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  samples.

  Ether  plays  a  style  of  sludge  metal  that  has  its  roots  in t he  NOLA  style  while  also  making  things  a  little bit  different,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  socio  political,  whitewashing  of  historically  tragic  events,  western  programming,  capitalism,  and  other  tenets  of  the  denigrating  of  the  human  condition.

  In  my  opinion  Ether  are  a  very  great  sounding  sludge  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "For  Every  Nail,  A  Noose"  "No  Gods,  All  Masters"  and  "Fleas  Of  A  Rat".  8  out  of  10.   

Cave Of Swimmers/The Sun/Southern Druid Rcords/2017 Single Review

  Cave  Of  Swimmers  are  a  duo  from  Florida  that h as  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge,  doom  metal  and  hard rock and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  single  "The  Sun"  which  was  released  by  Southern  Druid  Records.


  A  very  hard  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  single  along  with  some  drum b eats  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  when  vocals  are  added  onto  the  recording  they  add  in  an  epic  traditional  doom  metal  approach  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

 The  heaviness  of  sludge  can  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  which  also  mixes  in  a  decent  amount  of  hard  rock  elements  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  gives  the  songs  an  old  school  metal  feeling  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  both  of t he  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

  On this   recording  Cave  Of  Swimmers  gets  less  progressive  and  plays  more  of  a  mixture  of  doom  metal  and  hard  rock  along  with  some  stoner  touches,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cave  Of  Swimmers  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  doom  metal,  stoner  and  hard  rock,  you  should c heck  out  this  single.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "The  Sun".  8  out  of  10.

Laser Flames On The Great Big News/Self Titled/Wood And Stone Productions/2017 CD Review

  Laser  Flames  On  The  Great  Big  News  are  a  band  from  Nashville,  Tennessee  that  plays  a  mixture  of  southern,  alternative  rock  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2017  album  which  was  released  by  Wood  And  Stone  Productions.

  Psychedelic  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  slide  guitar  leads  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  southern  metal  direction  along  with  some  male  clean  vocals  and  the  music  also  mixes  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  while  the  solos  and  leads  add  in  a  touch  of  classic  rock.

  Female  vocals  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sound  very  powerful  and  acoustic  guitars  along  with  banjo's  and  violins  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  elements  of  90's  alternative  rock  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also  used  briefly  and  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  aggressive  screams  can  be  heard  and  they  add  in  touches  of  sludge and  hardcore.
