Morgengruss/Self Titled/Taxi Driver Records/2016Full Length Review

  Morgengruss  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of  folk,  drone,  psychedelia  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2016  album  which  was  released  by  Taxi  Driver  Records.

  Ambient  drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  yet  distorted  guitars  being  added  onto  the  recording  and  a  few  seconds  later  melodic  vocals  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  and  female  vocals  along  with  psychedelic  elements  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of the  songs.

  Traces  of neo  folk  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  with  the  acoustic  guitars  and  saxophones  and  the  distorted  riffs  add  a  touch  of  doom  metal  onto  the  recording  and  the  music also  gets  very  experimental  and  avant  garde  at  times  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  melodic  guitar  leads  on  a  later  track  and  a  couple  of  the  songs  are  all  instrumental  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.

  Morgengruss  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  experimental,  drone  and  folk  and  mixes  it  in  with  a  touch  of  doom  to  create  a  musical  style  of  their own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  depressive  and  poetic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Morgengruss  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  folk,  drone,  psychedelia  and  doom  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Father  Son"  "Apparent  Motion"  and  "Hope".  8  out  of  10.    

   

Mope/Self Titled/Taxi Driver Records/2014 Full Length Review

  Mope  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  an  instrumental  form  of  doom metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2014  album  which  was  released  by  Taxi  Driver  Records.

  Drum  beats  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  shamanistic  elements  and  a  few  seconds  later  clean  guitars  along  with  saxophones  are  added  onto  the  recording  before  going  into  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  where  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  and  the  music  also  gets  experimental  at  times.

  All  of  the  songs  avoid  vocals  and  song writing  while  also  having  more  of  a  jam  or  improv  feeling  at  times  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  on  the  second  track  avant  garde  sounds  and  pianos  are  added  onto  the  recording  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  psychedelic  elements  and  drones and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  very  slow  musical  direction.

  Mope  plays  an  instrumental  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  doom  metal  while also  adding  in  more  of  an  experimental  and  avant  garde  approach  to  this  genre  and  the  music  sounds  very  original  and  the  production  on  the  recording  also  brings  in  more  of  a  professional  sound.

  In  my  opinion  Mope  are  a  very  great  sounding  experimental,  instrumental  doom  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  musical  direction,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Doomed  To  Feed  The  Ground".  8  out  of  10.  

    

 

Krownn/Magmafrost/Taxi Driver Records/2014 Full length Review

  Krownn  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  traditional  and  epic  form  of  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Magmafrost"  which  was  released  by  Taxi  Driver  Records.

  Clean  yet  distorted  psychedelic  riffing  starts  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction  and  the  riffs  also  get  very  melodic  at  times  and  when  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  all  done  in  a  clean  singing  fashion  and   the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  both  the  70's  and  80's.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  you  can  also  hear  movie  samples  at  times  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  mid  paced  sections  and  70's  rock  style  guitar  leads  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  bass  guitar  leads  and  the  album closes  with  a  very  symphonic  and  epic  outro.

  Krownn  creates  another  epic  doom  metal  recording t hat  is  very  heavy,  retro  and  melodic  bringing  in  the  70's  and  80's  styles  of  the  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Norse/Celtic  Paganism  and  Fantasy  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Krownn  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  retro  or  traditional  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Wyvernking"  and  "Forge  of  Crom".  8  out  of  10.

Evil Whiplash/Beyond Dimensions/Iron, Blood & Death Corporation/2015 CD Review

  Evil  Whiplash  are  a  band  from  Columbia  that  plays  a  very  old  school  form  of  thrash  metal  with  touches  of  first  wave  black  metal  and  Possessed,  early  Onslaught  era  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Beyond  Dimension"  which  was  released  by  Iron,  Blood  &  Death  Corporation. 

  Witch  burning  and  night  sounds  start  off  the  album  giving  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling    before  adding  in  melodic  guitar  leads,  thrash  riffing  and  aggressive  German  influenced  vocals  and  all  of   the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's.

  At  times  the  solos  and  leads  bring  in  more  a  melodic  traditional  metal  style  and  you can  also  hear  a  lot  of  speed  metal  elements  in  the  bands  musical  style  along  with  a  great  dose  of  first  wave  black  metal  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  all  of t he  songs  sound  like  they  could  of  been  released  30  years  ago.

   The  songs  also  bring  in a   great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  some  tracks  also  show  the  band  throwing  in  melodic  screams  and  they  also  bring  in  an  instrumental  track  that  also  introduces  acoustic  and  classical  guitars  onto  the  recording  and  they  also  appear  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  as  well  and  a  couple  of  the  songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  last  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  melodic  chants.

  Evil  Whiplash  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  early  80's  thrash,  speed  metal  and  first  wave  black  metal  and  mixes  it  together  with  a  touch  of  death  metal  to  create  some  very  aggressive  music  that  avoids  sounding  modern,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  War  and  Violence  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Evil  Whiplash  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of   thrash  and  first  wave  black  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Flight  Of  Satan's  Whores"  "Moon  Shadows"  "In  The  Name  Of  The  Ancient  Empire"  and  "Ultimate  Void  Of  Chaos".  8/5  out  of  10.

 

Aggression/Fractured Psyche Demons/Galy Records/2015 CD Review

  Aggression  are  a  band  from  Quebec,  Canada  that h as  been around  for  more  than  30  years  and  plays  a  very  aggressive  form  of  thrash  metal  almost  bordering  on  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Fractured  Psyche  Demons"  which  was  released  by  Galy  Records.

  A  very  heavy  thrash  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along with  some  blast  beats  a  few  seconds  later  and  melodic guitar  leads  also  make  their  presence known  on  the  recording  and  the  vocals  are  very  rough  while  also  having  a  small  amount  of  melody  and  a  touch  of  death  metal  to  them  and  all  of  the  musicla  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  All  of  the  music  has  a  very  vintage  80's  metal  sound  to  it  and  can  easily  be  mistaken  as  an  album  they  recorded  and  released  back  then   and  the  riffs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  also hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  bass  guitar  leads  and  the  whole  album  also  remains  very  heavy  from  beginning  to  ending  of  the  recording.

  Aggression  remains  true  to  the  thrash  metal  style  that h ad  established  in  the  80's  while  also  mixing  in  a  touch  of  death  metal  at  time  to  create  a  very  heavy  album,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  yet  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  heavy  metal,  anti  religion,  horror,  death  and  violence  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Aggression  are  a  very  great  sounding  heavy  and  aggressive  thrash  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  'Defenders  Of  The  Old"  "Metal  Slaughter"  "Blaspheming  At  The  Altar"  and  "Torment  Or  Death".  8  out  of  10.

Universal Theory Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Hello there! It is a big pleasure to be here today.
We continue promoting the new album while we are working on new songs.
I am even beginning to think about the possibility of looking for musicians.


2.In August you had released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

The new album has a heavier sound and louder guitars, more in accordance with my roots.
Also it has a more intense sound in comparison with the debut album but we keep a deep and melodic atmosphere.


3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

The lyrics continue exploring experiences, thoughts, dreams, desires,
all combined with the emotions of life.


4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Universal Theory'?

I usually read science books and when I thought about the name,
I really loved it, because there are many Universal Theories.
These include emotions of life in terms that are at the same time both personal and universal.


5.Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you chose to remain a duo?

In “The Most Attractive Force” we have had the collaboration of Beth Hart
-an excellent Pianist and friend from Manchester- in the last track called “Light Vein”.
In Spain It is hard to find musicians who like and want to play this kind of music but as I said before
I am beginning to think about the idea of looking for musicians.
Hopefully later we can form a band and play all over the world.


6.The last album was released on Metal Hell Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Also the debut album "Mystery Timeline" was also released on Metal Hell Records.
Metal Hell Records began in 2012 and is an independent heavy metal label from Minnesota, US.
They promote unique bands like "Tengger Cavalry" (Mongolian Folk Metal) and now "Tamerlan" from Sidney (Symphonic Black Metal).


7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of goth and metal?

The response of people has been great so far.
Fortunately we are continually receiving very good feedback from the public and very good reviews from the Media.


8.Are any of the band members also involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

Not for now.


9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

As I said before hopefully I can form a band and play all over the world.
 
Rock & Metal music must be enjoyed in Live.


10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

At the moment our biggest influences could be a mix between Tiamat & Anathema
but these days I am listening Machined Head, Akira Yamaoka, Nick cave OST from Film "The Road".


11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Mainly Science, especially "Physics". I love reading sciences books
even though It is hard to understand it.
I love TV series like "The Walking Dead", "24", "Supernatural" or "True Blood"
Films & Video Games.

Rabid Flesh Eaters/Reign Of Terror/2016 Full Length Review

  Rabid  Flesh  Eaters  are  a  band  from  Texas  that  plays  a  mixture  of  thrash  and  speed  metal  with  a  touch  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2016  album  "Reign  Of  Terror"  which  will  be  released  on  April  15th.

  Night  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  the  sounds  of  werewolves  which  also  leads  up  to  a  heavier  musical  direction  along  with  some  old  school  metal  style  guitar  leads  and  after  a  few  seconds  aggressive  almost  spoken  vocals  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  screams  that  bring  in  a  touch  of  death  metal.

  Most  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  more  aggressive  80's  style  of  thrash  and  at  times  the  vocals  use  a  small  amount  of  melodic  singing  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  some  of  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of blast  beats.

 At  times  the  riffs  also  have  their  melodic  moments  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album progresses  elements  of  punk  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  tracks  and  a  couple  of  the  songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  whole  album  also  remains  heavy  from  beginning  to  ending  of  the  recording.

  Rabid  Flesh  eaters  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  the  most  heaviest  elements  of  thrash  and  speed  metal  and  mixes  them  together  along  with  some  of  the  early  80's  death  metal sound  to  create  a  very  old  school  yet  aggressive  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for t he  album  being  self  released  while  the  lyrics  cover  lycanthropy,  sociatel  decline,  the  psycology  of  terrorists,  serial  killers  and  imminent  doom.

  In  my  opinion  Rabid  Flesh  Eaters  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  thrash  and  speed  metal  with  a  touch  of  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Lycanthrope"  "Psychotic  Episode"  "Morbid  beast"  and  "Reign  Of  Terror".  8/5  out  of  10.
