Zippo/After Us/Apocalyptic Witchcraft/2016 CD Review

  Zippo  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge, stoner, doom, post metal, progressive, psychedelic  rock, and  noise and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "After  us"  which  was  released  by  Apocalyptic  Witchcraft.

  Drum  beats  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  more  of  a  heavier  stoner  metal  sound  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  clean  singing  70's  style  doom  metal  vocals  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  the  songs  also  mix  in a  lot  of  psychedelic  elements.

  The  heaviness  of  sludge  metal  can  be  heard  quite a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  bring  in  even  more  of  a  retro  rock  style  and  as  the  album  progresses elements of  post  rock  and  shoegaze  can  be  heard  and  some  of  the  tracks  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  along  with  a  couple  of  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  after  awhile  the  vocals  also  start  utilizing  more  aggressive  screams and  there  is also  a  touch  of  noise  being  used  briefly  and  spoken  word  parts  along  with  saxophones  are  added  onto  the  last  track.

  Zippo  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  stoner  metal  while  also  adding  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  and  doom  as  well  as  adding  in  some retro  progressive  and  psychedelic  in  with  some  more  modern post  metal  elements  to  create  something  very  original,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  wisdom  and  anger  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Zippo  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  sludge, stoner, doom, post metal, progressive, psychedelic  rock, and  noise  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "After  us"  "Adrift  (Alive)"  and  "The  Leftovers".  8  out  of  10.   

Moloken/All Is Left To See/Temple Of Torturous/2015 CD Review

  Moloken  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  progressive  and  atmospheric  mixture  of  sludge  metal  and  post  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015 album  "All  Is  Left  to  See"  which  was  released  by  Temple  Of  Torturous.

 A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some weird  structures  before  adding  in  melodic  guitar  leads  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  vocals  are  brought  onto  the  recording  they  are  mostly  aggressive  sludge  style  screams  and  atmospheric  synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  Clean  playing  can  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  after  awhile  more  elements  of  post  hardcore  can  be  heard  on  the  recording  and  there are  also  a  couple  of  brief  instrumentals  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  some  songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  also  becomes  more  progressive  as  the  album  progresses  and  violins  are  added  onto  the  last  track. 

  Moloken  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  sludge  metal  and  post  hardcore  into  more  of  a  progressive  and  atmospheric  musical  direction,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Moloken  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric and  progressive  mixture  of  sludge  metal  and  post  hardcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "All  Is  Left  To  See"  "Seventh  Circle"  and  "Beginning  Of  The  End".  8  out  of  10.

Coffinfish/Epilogue/Unquiet Records/2016 EP Review

  Coffinish  are  a  band  from Poland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  experimental,  sludge  and  post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of their  2016  ep  "Epilogue"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Unquiet  Records.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some distorted  reverb  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of an  atmospheric  feeling  and  the  20  minute  song  can  also  be  very  avant  garde  and  experimental  in  some  parts  and  once  the  drum  beats kick  in  more  traces  of  post  rock  are  added  onto  the  recording.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  ep  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to them  and  the  solos  and  leads  stick  to  mostly  a  melodic  musical  direction  and  when  vocals  are  brought  into  the  music  they  are  mostly  aggressive  sludge  style  screams  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  the  heaviness  of  the  same  genre  while  also  mixing  in  with  the  more  atmospheric  sounds  that  are  present  in  the  song  which  also  brings  in  elements  of  post  hardcore  and  after  awhile  a  brief  use  of  melodic  vocals  can  be  heard.

  Coffinish  creates  a  song  that  is  over  20  minutes  in  length  that  mixes  the  heaviness  of  sludge  metal  and  hardcore  with  the  melody  of  post  rock  while  also  being  very  experimental  at  the  same  time,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  based  upon  the  writings  of  H.P  Lovecraft.

  In  my  opinion  Coffinish  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  experimental,  hardcore,  sludge  and  post  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  8  out  of  10.    

 

Bedowyn/Blood Of The Fall/2015 Full Length Review

  Bedowyn  are  a  band  from  North  Carolina  that  plays  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  sludge,  stoner and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released 2015  album  "Blood  On  the  Fall".

  Atmospheric  synths  start off  the  album  before  adding in  more  of  a  heavier  sound  that  also  incorporates  stoner  style  melodies  and  once  the  drums  kick  in  the  music  starts  bringing  in  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  along  with  some  sludge  style  screams  which  also  mixes  in  with  soem  melodic  singing.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  you  can  also  hear  a  lot  of  70's  influences  in  the  bands  musical  style  while  also  sounding  very  modern  at  the  same  times  and  clean  playing  along  with  acoustic guitars  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  some  riffs  also  bring  in  a  touch  of  thrash  and  the  instrumental  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  synths  and  keyboards  before  making  a  return  back  to  a  heavier  direction  on  the  following  tracks  while t here  is  still  a  power  ballad  almost  towards the  end.

  Bedowyn  plays  a  style  of  sludge  and  stoner  metal  that  also  mixes  in  elements  of  atmospheric,  doom  and  thrash  metal  to  create  a  very  heavy  yet  melodic  album,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion Bedowyn  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  mixture  of  sludge,  stoner  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rite  To  Kill"  "Leave  the  Living  For  Dead"  "I  Am  The  Flood"  and  "Lord  Of  The  Suffering".  8  out  of  10.

Ethereal Riffian/Youniversal Voice/2016 Live CD Review

  Ethereal  Riffian  are  a  band  from  Ukraine  that  plays  a  very  progressive  and  psychedelic  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released live  2016  album  "Youniversal  Voice".

  Ambient  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  chanting  that  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  shamanistic  feeling  along  with  a  touch of  Eastern  Mysticism  before  adding  in  acoustic guitars  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  exotic  atmosphere  while  the  tribal  beats  and  ethnic  instruments  are  very  ritualistic.

  After  awhile  the  music  starts  getting  more  heavier  while  still  mixing  in  with  the  ritualistic  sounds  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  very  dark  and  melodic  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  heaviness  adds  in  elements  of  doom,  sludge  and  stoner  metal  along  with  some melodic  vocals that  are  done  in  more  of  a  70's  style.

  At  times  the  vocals  get  very  aggressive  and  all  of  the  musical instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  all  of  the  songs  are  recorded  live  and  the  music  also  gets  more  psychedelic,  atmospheric,  progressive  and  experimental  as  the  album  progresses  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  you  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  world  music  elements  throughout  the  recording  and  one  of  the  tracks  shows  the  music going  into  more  of  a  mid  paced  stoner  rock  musical direction  while  the  main  focus  remains  more  on  a  slower  style.  

  Ethereal  Riffian  plays  a  style  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  that  is  a  lot  more  progressive,  experimental  and  ritualistic  than  most  bands  of  this  genre,  the  produciton  sounds  very  professional  along  with  all  of  the  songs  being  recorded  live  while t he  lyrics  cover  Eastern  Mysticism  and  Native  American  Shamanism.

  In  my  opinion  Ehereal  Riffian  are  a  very  great  sounding  progressive  and  psychedelic  mixture  of  stoner,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Beyond"  "Wakan  Tanka"  and  "Drum  Of  The  Deathless".  8  out  of  10.

   

   

Monster Coyote/Neckbreaker/2015 Full Length Review

  Monster  Coyote  are  a  band  from  Brazil  that  plays  a  very  heavy  form  of  sludge  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2015  album  "Neckbreaker".

  Dark  sound  effects  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  more  of  a  distorted  sound  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  musical  direction  along  with  some  dark  yet  melodic  guitar  leads  wjile t he  vocals  are  aggressive  screams  that  also  add  in  a  touch  of  hardcore  while t he  heaviness  is  more  in  the  sludge  metal  direction.

  At  times  elements  of  thrash  can  be  heard  in  the  bands  musical  style  and  spoken  word  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  while  the  riffing  also  adds  in  melodies  at  times  along  with  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  a  few  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length

  Monster  Coyote  plays  a  style  of  sludge  metal  that  is  very  heavy  and  aggressive  while  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  doom,  stoner,  thrash  and  hardcore  which  makes  the  album  even  more  heavier,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  Werewolves,  Legends  and  Tales.

  In  my  opinion  Monster  Coyote  are  a  very  great  sounding  sludge  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "IDDQD"  "The  Worst  Blind"  "Spirtual  Karma"  and  "I  Fucked  A  Witch".  8/2  out  of  10.   

Irata/Sweet Loris/Retro Futurist/2015 CD Review

  Irata  are  a  band  from  North  Carolina  that  plays  a  progressive  mixture  of  sludge,  stoner  and  doom  metal  and  this  is a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Sweet  Loris"  which  was  released  by Retro  Futurist.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction  and  after  awhile  vocals  that  use  a  mixture  of  both  melodic  singing  and  sludge  style  screams  are  added  onto  the  recording  which  also  adds  more  of  a  stoner  rock  vibe  to  the  bands  musical  style.

 Some  of  the  songs  are  very  long  and  epic in  length  while  the  solos  and  leads a re  very  melodic  and  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  at  times and  the  songs  also  bring  in  some  90's  alternative  rock  and  grunge  elements  while  also  mixing  in  some  mid  paced  sections  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  acoustic  guitars  are  added  onto  the  last  track.

  Irata  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  progressive  metal  and  mixes  it  with  sludge,  doom  metal  and  stoner  rock  with  a touch  of  alternative  and  grunge to  create  their  own  style,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  poetic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Irata  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  progressive,  sludge,  doom  and  stoner  metal  and  if  you  are a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Lion  Slayer"  "Chorline"  and  "Teeth  Of  the  Artic  Storm".  8  out  of 10.
