Dr. Gloumon Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?
1. I have been playing the guitar since I was little. I started with a classic guitar but then I found myself more related to the electric guitar. I was really enjoying it, I felt the need to compose, and to explore all the possibilities the instrument offered me. Then, I wanted to take it to the next level. So I started recording, improving and thinking also as a listener, what I would like to listen. I have been playing under the name of Dr.Gloumon since 2012, when I released my first EP on the internet. Being a one man band, I write, record and make my covers myself. I released my second EP recently. I really love what I am doing and more than that, music helps me to express myself better than words, who I am and what I feel.

2.So far you have released 2 ep's, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on both of the recordings and also how do they differ from each other?
2. Both are instrumental. The first EP was focused on melodies, it was standard E tuning and diverse, with many guitar solos. In the second one, on the other hand, I concentrated more on the rhythm and I made it more heavy. I used this time drop A# tuning so it is louder and powerful. Improving my skills in programming drums helped a lot. I imposed myself to not use any electronic effects this time. I wanted the EP's sound to be more raw, direct and simple.

3.So far the music has been all instrumental, are you planning on using vocals in the future or do you chose to remain instrumental?
3. I'm happy doing instrumental music but I'm thinking about vocals also.

4.What are some of the themes and images you bring out with your musical sound?
4. It is about introspection. Music is a positive way for me to express my negative feelings and put all the energy that is inside me out. Using the instrumental gives a certain freedom to the imagination of the listener. Everyone could  interpret the music in its own way.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Dr. Gloumon'?
5. "Dr. Gloumon" popped into my head and it just sounded right! This name worked very well because I was practically experimenting with music, and it felt very funny.

6.With this musical project you record everywhere by yourself, do you prefer doing things this way than working with a full band?
6. Doing the music by myself gives me a certain freedom and let me experiment in the way I want, most of it because it is a reflection of myself and what I felt at a certain point. I would also be interested in playing with others. I am looking forward to find people to jam with, to experiment live music.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
7. I haven't thought about it too much.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of metal?
8. I have received very positive feedback from the people that heard it. I am working also to reach even more people.

9.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?
9. I'm thinking of making an album. I have already gathered some material and I am working on my recording skills to make it sound even better.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
10. Definitely Gojira and Cloudkicker are my biggest influences. I am inspired by In Flames and basically everything that I listen to, from hip hop to french songs. Currently, some of my favorite artists are Cunninlynguists, John Frusciante, The Dø, Plini, Alt-J, Alain Bashung, Emmanuel Urbanet… Paradoxically, I don't really listen to metal music anymore, beside the bands I mentionned.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
11. I am passionate about gardening. I actually study landscape architecture. I am very interested in reading literature and digital painting too.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
12. Thank you very much for the interview. I am enjoying what I am doing and I hope the others will enjoy it too!

Spook The Horses/Rainmaker/2015 Full Length Review

Spook  The  Horses  are  a  band  from  New  Zealand  that  plays  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  metal  and  post  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2015  album  "Rainmaker"  which  will  be  released  in  February.

A  very  dark,  distorted  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  album  which  leads  up  to  a  heavier  sound  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  and  after  awhile  synths  and  brass  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  clean  playing  that  also  adds  in  more  of  a  post  rock  feeling  when  it  is  utilized.

Some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  and  when  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  very  aggressive  hardcore  style  screams  while  some  of  the  later  tracks  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  singing  and  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  a  very  slow  musical  direction  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  into  all  of  the  tracks  along  with  a  small  amount  of  melodic  guitar  leads  being  utilized  at  times  and  one  of  the  alter  tracks  also  brings  in  elements  of  80's  post  punk  and  mix  it  in  with  more  of  a  modern  sound..

Spook  the  Horses  plays  a  style  of  post  hardcore  that  is  also   influenced  by  the  more  extreme  sound  of  metal  and  they  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric  in  with  a  perfect  balance  between  melody  and  heaviness,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  Spook  The  Horse  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  atmospheric  metal  and  post  hardcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Footfall"  "Flood"  and  "Below  Our  Time".  8  out  of  10.

Quartz/Too Hot To Handle/Skol Records/2015 CD Review

Quartz  are  a  band  from  the  united  Kingdom  that  have  been  around  since  the  1970's  and  where  part  of  the  NWOBHM  movement  and  plays  a  traditional  form  of  heavy  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Too  Hot  To  Handle"  which  was  released  by  Skol  Records.

Clean  playing  which  is  also  used  later  on  in  certain  sections  starts  off  the  album  giving  the  music  a  classic  rock  feeling  along  with  some  vocals  riffs,  and  guitar  leads  that  have  a  very  vintage  70's  metal  sound  to  them  and  the  music  sticks  to  mostly  a  slow  to  mid  paced  yet  hard  and  melodic  musical  direction  along  with  a  good  mixture  of  both  power  ballads  and  harder  tracks.

All  of  the  songs  sound  like  they  could  off  been  recorded  and  released  in  the  70's  and  also  sound  like  lost  tracks  from  their  earlier  recordings  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  all  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  at  times  synths  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  giving  the  music  more  of  a  progressive  rock  feeling  and  the  songs  are  just  as  much  hard  rock  as  they  are  heavy  metal.

Quartz  plays  a  style  of  NWOBHM  that  has  a  lot  in  common  with  other  bands  of  this  genre  while  also  bringing  in  elements  of  early  70's  hard  rock  and  proto  metal  which  also  makes  their  music  stand  out  a  bit  more,  the  production  has  a  very  old  school  yet  professional  sound  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  real  life  and  mythological  themes.

In  my  opinion  Quartz  are  a  very  great  sounding  NWOBHM  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Crack  The  Sky"  "Buried  Alive"  "Avalon"  and  "Gold  Digger".  8  out  of  10.

Valentin The Mad/Deadly Obsessions Demos Review

Valentin  The  Mad  is  a  solo  artist  from  Israel  that  plays  an  instrumental  style  of  progressive  metal  with  some  elements  of  thrash  and  indie  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  demo  songs  that  are  self  released  on  his  YouTube  channel.

The  first  track  which  is  also  the  first  he  uploaded  is  more  of  a  soft  rock  instrumental which  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  clean  playing,  melodic  guitar  leads  and  powerful  sounding  bass  guitars  while  the  following  track  goes  for  more  of  an  indie  and  progressive  rock  mixture  and  mixing  these  2  style  together  gives  his  songs  more  of  a  modern  day  feeling.

The  third  track  in  the  series  shows  the  music  getting  more  heavier  and  bringing  in  a  progressive  metal  sound  while  the  following  song  shows  the  music  getting  a  lot  more  heavier  and  bringing  in  more  of  a  thrash  sound  and  he  follow  this  song  with  another  track  that  shows  things  coming  down  a  bit  and  going  for  more  of  a  traditional  style  of  progressive  rock

Once  the  6th  video  kicks  in  the  music  starts  bringing  in  more  of  an  80's  style  of  AOR  progressive  rock  which  he  follows  up  with  a  track  that  sees  the  music  returning  to  a  metal  direction  and  adding  in  elements  of  Arabian  music,  while  the  following  track  goes  for  more  of  a  traditional  and  old  school  style  of  heavy  metal  and  the  last  2  tracks  go  back  to  a  progressive  rock  sound  with  the  first  one  being  a  rock  ballad  with  the  last  song  is  more  of  a  soft  instrumental

Valentin  The  Mad  plays  an  instrumental  style  of  progressive  rock  that  only  uses  electric  guitars  and  drum  programming  and  he  also  mixes  in  heavy  metal,  thrash  and  indie  rock  into  his  musical  style  and  the  production  has  a  decent  sound  for  being  self  released  and  self  produced.

In  my  opinion  Valentin  the  Mad  is  a  very  great  sounding  instrumental  mixture  of  progressive,  indie  rock,  heavy  metal  and  thrash  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  artist.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Deadly  Obsession"  "The  Devils  Courtyard"  "Sandstorm  and  "Apocalyptic  Visions".  8  out  of  10.

Worselder/MMXIV/2014 EP Review

This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Worselder  which  continues  the  stoner  and  groove  metal  of  their  previous  recording  and  the  ep  was  self  released  in  2014.

Clean  desert  rock  style  playing  which  is  also  used  on  some  of  the  other  songs  as  well  starts  off  the  ep  and  after  a  few  minutes  electric  guitars  are  introduced  into  the  music  and  they  take  the  music  into  more  of  a  melodic  and  heavy  stoner  metal  direction  along  with  some  clean  singing  vocals  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Elements  of  power  metal  can  be  heard  in  the  vocals  at times  while  the  leads  add  more  melody  to  the  music  while  the  mid  paced  sections  bring  in  a  heavy  groove  metal  influence  and  the  vocals  also  bring  in  a  more  aggressive  influence  from  that  genre  as  well  in  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  just  like  the  previous  recording  all  of  the  tracks  stick  to  a  slow  to  mid  paced  direction.

Worselder  continue  the  stoner  and  groove  metal  mixture  of  previous  recordings  as  well  as  keeping  around  a  power  metal  influence  and  adding  a  touch  of  doom  metal  into  the  songs  this  time  around,   the  production  sounds  very  powerful  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Worselder  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  stoner  and  groove  metal,   you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Home  Of  the  Grave".  8  out  of  10.

Worselder/Where We Come From/2010 Full Length Review

Worselder  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  mixture  of  stoner  and  groove  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2010  album  "Where  We  Came  From".

A  very  heavy  groove  metal/hardcore  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  stoner  rock  melodies  and  the  vocals  start  out  being  very  melodic  before  adding  in  more  aggressive  parts  as  well  as  mixing  the  two  together  and  you  can  hear  a  heavy  influence  of  thrash  in  the  bands  musical  style  which  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's.

When  solos  and  leads  are  added  onto  the  recording  they  bring  in  even  more  of  a  melodic  sound  to  the  recording  along  with  the  vocals  bringing  in  a  touch  of  power  metal  at  times  and  you  can  also  hear  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  being  utilized  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  all  of  the  songs  stick  to  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

Worselder  plays  a  style  of  metal  that  is  very  melodic  and  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  taking  the  stoner,  hardcore  and  groove  metal  genres  of  that  era  and  mixing  them  in  with  a  touch  of  thrash  and  power  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  real  life  themes.

In  my  opinion  Worselder  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  mixture  of  stoner  and  groove  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "6  Days"  "A  Trip  Into  Your  Soul"  and  "The  Prison  Of  Dirt".  8  out  of  10.

Bestial  Invasion  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  very  old  school  and  technical  form  of  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  ep  "Silent  Waters"  which  was  released  by  Archaic  Sounds.

A  very  powerful  sounding  bass  guitar  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  technical  riffs  and  solos  as  well  as  some  aggressive  female  vocals  which  can  also  be  very  melodic  at  times  and  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  80's  style  of  thrash  metal  and  also  brings  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  throughout  the  song.

The  second  song  which  is  also  a  cover  of  Morbid  Saint's  "Damien"  starts  out  with  a  very  raw  and  aggressive  thrash  sound  along  with  leads  being  added into  some  parts  of  the  song  and  the  vocals  on  this  track  are  a  lot  more  aggressive  on  this  track  while  they  still  have  a  very  melodic  edge  to  them.

Bestial  Invasion  plays  a  style  of  thrash  that  is  very  raw,  old  school  and  technical  as  well  as  having  a  very  vintage  80's  sound  to  them,  the  production  sounds  very  raw,  old  school  yet  professional  all  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  Bestial  invasion  are  a  very  great  sounding  technical  old  school  thrash  metal band  and  if  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Silent  Wonders".  8  out  of  10.
