StampKase Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
Hi, great to spread the word over Extreme Underground Music Zine. Well, the band has going through some line-up changes, for over a year to be precise. This period served to be an introspected one, setting the next step and clearing up on the best way to survive in such a small land! Faith has kept us pursuing a new guitarist and I think we are near to rest the case - indeed, we just don't want to make it official right now! Besides, during this incompletion, we'd never stopped rehearsing and some new songs have come out of the box, as Nuno (bass player) also plays the guitar and he has thrown out some riffs together with me (drummer). This way we keep the engines oiled and certainly saving some ideas for when the line-up is complete again.

2.In 2012 the band released an album how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
I think it is, overall, a modern fusion of melodic, heavy and technical music. We don't like to call it progressive, but it certainly can cause some surprise along the tracklist as the songs can create many different moods - since the thrashy «Random Shot», to the radio friendly «Faded», coming across the calm «Déjà-Vu» and finishing with the schizoid/experimental «Mechanorganism». I think we aimed to create a dynamic and modern record and I think we've made it!

3.The band has been around since 2003 but so far has only released one album, can you tell us a little bit more about it?
Simple! If you know what it is to be a metal band in such a far, recondite and small place like Azores, you would certainly understand it. The metal community here used to be vast and strong but never enough to make a band able to play that much and make some money out of music. So, it was really tough to finance this record, and most of all, we don't have that much professionals in the music industry out here - not to say most of them are unprofessional. To be precise, «Mechanorganism» was to be released around 2008, but the studio we were working on got closed and we lost money with that! Therefore, we needed more time to resettle and we ended up refreshing our tracklist and recording part of the album outside of the islands. Should I say we are about 2.000 km from Portugal mainland? Yeah, if every local band wants to play in a bigger circuit they need a two hours flight that would cost us nearly 1.000 euros! Yeah, that's why you don't hear about Azorean bands so often! But this is old stories, no room for complaints! We survived and we are honored for this!

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
We are not that kind of band sticked to just one specific topic, but «Mechanorganism» ended up pretty much like a concept album. Not like that ones with a story guideline but every song has a strong connection. «Mechanorganism» is basically about observing human behavior and how Mankind is becoming self-destructive. It also states about very trivial subjects as bipolar and epilepsy diseases, as it reveals the complexity of the human body. We also talk about addicted gamblers and mad scientists that try to create the perfect human being.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'StampKase'?
Oh, this is a great question. Not every band name has a deep story behind! It was a very simple idea. Our first rehearsal room was a very small one built with styrofoam inside Ruben's (vocalist) parents garage. We couldn't use the whole place, just a corner, inside that box! Besides, the neighbors weren't that kind! So, the word "stamp" was taken because we were really into this project and felt like each one should leave their mark on everything we do. We really wanted to make something honest, solid and professional. Actually, our small town never had such a heavy band, it is a very calm place.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
No doubt to say that opening Mnemic was a milestone for us! It was also the first time an international metal band came to São Miguel island... it was really memorable! Afterwards, we played with Fear My Thoughts, Dagoba, Exilia, Switchtense and many great bands from Azores like Morbid Death and Tolerance 0. Concerning our performance, I'm not the best person to tell, but everyone that comes to our shows really gets caught by our energy! We used to have two vocalists which really fill the place and the rest of the guys also kept very dynamic, mainly our former guitarist which uses a typical face painting.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Not at all. In Azores we can't think about touring, we have to think about recording and trying to get outside the islands. Anyway, the main goal for us now is to find a new line-up and finish our forthcoming record.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?
Indeed, we had a proposal very recently. I think it will be something really great for the band, but we haven't signed anything yet, as we need to solve the line-up subject first.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?
As an independent artist it was very difficult to make all the promotion by ourselves, so we didn't get dozens and dozens of reviews and interviews, but I would say we made a great job anyway and got even a great review in Terrorizer (I think we were the first band from Azores to get reviewed there). In Portugal we have a good reputation but we want more. I'm sure in a next record with more support and experience we can reach a higher level!

10.When can we expect another album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
I'm not sure where we are heading musically wise. We really love many kinds of music and we don't see ourselves establishing just one goal for our next record. I would say we might keep the melody, the groove and some experimental/technical elements. That's how we feel comfortable. We love bands like Textures, Intervals, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah... So, despite not trying to be none of them, we like to play with all their elements. About a new record, I can't say until we get working with a new guitarist, but once it happens I'm sure the process will be quick and smooth. We have some ideas on the running and maybe a shorter album, an EP, would be the right step to take next.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Well, I've already mentioned some of the bands that inspire us, but they are so many to tell. I'm not sure... I listen to so many genres - post-rock, black metal, thrash metal, prog metal, djent... everything we find it's good music, diverse, dynamic and creative. It really depends on the mood... we are that kind of guys that never close their minds to whatever music people are making. It just has to feel good to our hears. I remember that Pantera, Metallica, Cradle Of Filth and even nu-metal played an important role in our first years as metalheads and musicians. Besides, even Dream Theater got us immersed in all that technical majesty. We learned many things with them!

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
I think as pretty normal and healthy guys we are, we love to hang out with friends, be nonsense, laugh, play videogames (yeah, not only children do that), watch soccer, have a walk in our beautiful islands, dive... Well, I'm not sure if I disappointed you, but this is what we do when not playing... and working of course! I forgot to say that the three of us also keep busy on bands like Sanctus Nosferatu, Fake Society and Human Hate! So, we have plenty of work and music to create!

13.Before we wrap up this interview do you have any final words or thoughts?
Just wish that everyone gets really supportive of the Azorean scene! Bands here struggles really hard to have their music out! It is not like other places where you have many venues to play and a big audience. You have to be really strong to handle it! So, please spread the word and listen to the great music coming out of Azores!

Escapetor/Fear/Crime Records/2014 CD Review

Escapetor  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  plays  a  mixture  of  heavy  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Fear"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Crime  Records.

A  very  aggressive  speed/thrash  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  vocals  that   very  rough  yet  melodic  at  the  same  time  and  after  awhile  back  up  gang  shouts  are  added  into  the  music  and  you  can  also  hear  a  slight  death  metal  influence  in  the  bands  musical  sound  at  times  and  the  band  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of clean  playing  on  a  few  of  the  tracks  and  melodic  old  school  metal  solos  and  leads  at  times.

The  bands  musical  style  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  style  of  metal  while  the  production  gives  the  music  a  more  up  to  date  sound  and  on  one  of  the  tracks  the  band  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  70's  rock  influences  into  their  style  of  metal  and  the  band  sticks  mostly  to  more  of  a  mid  paced  direction  on  most  of  the  songs  while  they  also  have  their  fast  moments  at  times  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  halfway  through  the  recording  the  band  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  folk  metal  elements  one  one  of  the  tracks  and  they  close  the  album  with  a  cover  of  Johnny  Cash's  "Folsom  Prison  Blues".

Escapetor  takes  a  very  old  school  style  of  thrash  and  mixes  it  with  the  melody  of  traditional  and  speed  metal  while  also  taking  this  musical  style  and  making  it  sound  very  modern  again,  the  production  has  a  very  professional  sound  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion   Escapetor  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  heavy  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Queen"  "Dealing  With  Fate"  "Suicide"  and  "Creatures  Of  the  Night".  8  out  of  10.

Sideburn/The Wrath Of Mrs Slaughter/VDH/2014 EP Review

Sideburn  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  thrash  with  elements  of  punk,  metalcore  and  doom  metal  which  they  call cocktailcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  ep  "The  Wrath  Of  Mrs  Slaughter"  which  will  be released  on  September  30th  by  VDH.

A  very  dark and  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  post  metal  style  guitar  riffing  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  the  music  starts  to  get  more  heavy  and  melodic  sounding  along  with  some  aggressive  style  hardcore  vocals  and  screams  and  on  the  following  track  the  music  starts  incorporating  more  thrash  elements.

When  slower  riffs  are  utilized  you  can  hear  the  doom  metal  elements  start  to  kick  in  and  the  band  also  uses  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  solos  and  leads  that  utilize  some  exotic  sounding  scales  and  the  bass  guitars  also  have  a  very  dominant  sound  on  the  recording  and  on one  of  the  later  tracks  the  band  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  before  making  a  return  back  to  a  heavier  musical  direction  as  well  as  addign  in  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  to  the  vocals.

Sideburn  combines  a  variety  of  styles  from  thrash,  doom,  post  metal,  metalcore  and  punk  to  create  their  own  sound  on  this  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  Sideburn  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  thrash,  doom  metal  and  metalcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Emptiness"  and  "Run  And  Die".  8  out of  10.

Damage Source/Raise Hell/2013 Demo Review

Damage  Source  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  an  old  school  form  of  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2013  demo  "Raise  Hell".

The  demo  starts  out with  a  very  old  school  German  style  thrash  metal  sound  along  with  some  screams  that  are  heavily  influenced  by  early  Kreator  and  after  awhile  a  few  seconds  of  growls  are  added  into  the  music  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  influences  and  all  of  the  musical instruments  have  a  very  powerful  presence  on  this  recording.

There  is  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  throughout  the  recording  and  the music  seems  to  be  influenced  by  both  the  American  and  German  thrash  metal  bands  or  the  80's  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  they  bring  a  very  melodic  and  technical  feeling  to  the  bands  musical  sound.

Damage  Source  plays  a  very  aggressive  and  old  school  style  of  thrash  metal  and  goes  back  to  the  days  when  this  was  the  most  aggressive  style  of  this  genre  during  the  mid  80's  and  there  are  also  some  early  traces  of  death metal  in  their  musical  sound  and  the  songs  sound  like  they  could  of  been  recorded  in  1987  while  this  is  actually  a  younger  band  playing  this  style,  the  production  sound s very  old  school  yet  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  Satan  and  aggression.

In  my  opinion  Damage  Source  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  thrash  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Raise  hell"  and  "On  Your  Knees".  8  out  of  10.

Lo-Pan/Colossus/Small Stone/2014 CD Review

Lo-Pan  are  a  band  from  Ohio  that  plays  a  stoner  form  of  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Colossus"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Small  Stone.

A  very  heavy  and  retro  sounding  stoner  rock  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  vocals  and  the  music  also  bring s in  the  heaviness  of  metal  and  the  guitar  riffs  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  70's  influences  while  also  taking  their  music  into  a  more  modern  and  up  to  date  musical  direction  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

You  can  hear  a  bit  of  the  early  90's  Seattle  sound  in  the  music  at  times  circa  91-92  and  the band  sticks  mostly  to  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction  and  as  the  album  progresses  more  proto  metal  elements  can  be  heard  in  their musical  sound  and  they  avoid  any  use  of  solos  and  leads  except  for  the  last  track  where  they  are  used  briefly  to  focus  more  on  a  hard  and  heavy  sound  from  beginning  to  end  of  the  recording.

Lo-Pan  plays  a  very  heavy  and  riff  orientated  form  of  stoner  metal  and  while  there  is  not  much  in  the  way  of  originality  on  this  recording  the  band  makes  up  for  it  by  keeping  the  music  very  hard  and  very  retro  sounding,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  everyday  themes.

In  my  opinion  Lo-Pan  are  a  very  great  sounding  stoner  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Regulus"  "Marathon  Man"  "Vox"  and  "The  Duke".  8  out  of  10.

StampKase/Mechanorgasm/2012 CD Review

StampKase  are  a  band  from  Portugal  that  plays  a  very  extreme,  modern  and  progressive  form  of  metal  and  this is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2012  album  "Mechanorgasm".

A  very  heavy and  djent  orientated  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  aggressive  vocals  and  screams  and  a  few  seconds  later  clean  singing  is  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  you  can  also  hear  some  atmospheric  sounds  being  utilized  in  the  background  at  times  and  after  awhile  the  band  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts.

The  guitar  work  that  is  presented  on  this  recording  has  more  of  the  more  modern  style  of  progressive  metal  but mixed  in  with  more  of  a  groove  metal  direction  while  you  can  also  hear  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  influences  in  their  musical  sound  when  it  comes  to  the  heavier  parts  and  the  music  also  has  a  sound  that  would  almost  be  mainstream  enough  to  be  played  on  radio  stations.

There  is  a  decent  amount  of  melody  in  the  bands  musical  style  and  they  also  bring  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  band  also  starts  adding  in  more  spoken  word  samples  and  electronic  music  sounds  on  some  of  the  songs   as  well  as  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  in  some  of  the  later  tracks,  halfway  through  the  album  melodic  guitar  leads  start  finding  there  way  into  the  music  briefly.

StampKase  plays  a  very  extreme  style  of  progressive  metal  that  is  more  in  a  modern  direction  and  also  brings  in  elements  of  other  styles  of  metal  and  finding  a  decent  balance  between  melody  and  heaviness  and  while  this  is  not  my  favorite  style  of  metal  I  still  feel  the  band  is  very  good  for  what   they  are  trying  to  do  with  their  musical  sound,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  real  life  themes.

In  my  opinion  StampKase  are  a  very  decent  sounding  modern,  extreme  and  progressive  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dodge  Fire"  "Angular  Plasma"  "Deja  Vu"  and  "Stamina".  7/5  out  of  10.

Gust/Self Titled/Southern Lord Records/2014 CD Review

Gust  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  very  progressive  form  of  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2014  album  which  will  be  released  on  September  14th  by  Southern  Lord  Records.

A  very  raw  and  old  school  hardcore  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  aggressive  crustcore  style  screams  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  to  speed  up  a  bit  and  adds  in  d  beats  along  with  the  guitars  adding  a  metal  influence  and  the  slower  sections  bring  a  progressive  feeling  to  the  recording  along  with  some  melody.

The  guitar  leads  the  band  uses  go  back  to  the  80's  style  of  hardcore  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  a  good  amount  of  reverb  and  distorted  parts  and  some  of  the  riffing  also  brings  a  post  hardcore  feeling  to  the  bands  musical  sound  at  times  but  in  a  more  heavier  and  darker  manner  and  more  than  halfway  through  the album  clean  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  briefly  along  with  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts  before  making  a  return  back  to  a  heavier  musical  direction.

Gust  plays  a  very  old  school  style  that  combines  in  elements  of  crust  and  d  beat   as  well  as  some  metal  influences  while  also  bringing  in  more  progressive  structures  to  their  musical  sound  without  watering  down  their  songs  like  most  bands  of  this  genre  when  they  make  an  attempt  at  the  same  style,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  heavy  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  angry,  hateful  and  political  themes.

In  my  opinion  Gust  are  a  very  great  sounding  progressive  hardcore  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "History  Repeats"  "Unease"  "Hollow  Faces"  and  "Restless  hands".  8  out  of  10.
