Tummler And Solomon/You've Worn Out Your Welcome/2014 CD Review

  Tummler  And  Solomon  are  a  band  from  Tacoma,  Washington  that  plays  an  organ  themed  form  of  doom/sludge/post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  album  "You've  Worn  Out  Your  Welcome".

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  bass  guitar  sound  starts  off  with  the  album  along  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  organs  and  a  minute  later  clean  singing  vocals  find  their  way  onto  the  recording  and  the music  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  psychedelic  elements  in  their  songs  and  after  awhile  you  can hear  a  mixture  and  clean  parts  being  utilized  in  the  tracks.

  Most  of  the  songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  doom  metal  is  the  most  dominant  style  on  this  album  while  they  do  add  in  some  sludge  and  post  metal  elements  to  update  their  retro  70's  style  for  the  modern  days  as  well  as  having  a  jam  rock  style  of  playing  bordering  on  improv  throughout  the  tracks  and  later  on  during  the  album  acoustic  guitars  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

  Tummler  And  Solomaon  plays  a  style  that  is  very  dark,  heavy  and  retro  and  reminds  me  of  Black  Sabbath,  Black  Widow,  Type O  Negative  and  modern  post  sludge  metal  all  being  mixed  together,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  paranormal  and  the  unknown  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  Tummler  And  Solomon  are  a  very  great  sounding  organ  themed  doom/post  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "You've  Worn  Out  Your  Welcome"  "Climbing  Up  The  Curtains"  and  "Handfed  by  Ghosts".  8  out  of  10.

Unisonic/For The Kingdom/Armoury Records/2014 EP Review

  Unisonic  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  hard rock  form  of  power  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  ep  "For  The  Kingdom"  which  was released  by  Armoury  Records.

  The  ep  starts  old  with  a  very  melodic  and  old  school  metal  sound  along  with  symphonic  elements  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  which  leads  up  to  some  melodic  vocals  and  more  traces  of  mainstream  hard  rock  as  well  as  remaining  true  to  a  German  style  of  power  metal.

  Guitar  solos  on  the  ep  remain  true  to  a  melodic  power  and  traditional  metal  sound  and  the  second  newer  track  shows  the  band  sticking  to  the  musical  style  they  had  established  on  the  previous  album  I  reviewed  a  year  back  and  the  rest  of  the  ep  are  all  live  tracks  with  the  first  one  using  Wagner's  "Rise  Of  The  Valykrie"  as  the  intro  before  going  into  their  hard  and  heavy  rock  approach  to  power  metal.

  Unisonic  bring  in  2  new  tracks  that  show  them  remaining  true  to  power  metal  while  also  adding  in  4  live  tracks  and  this  ep  is  something  to  hold  fans  over  until  their  next  full length  album  is  released,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  everyday  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Unisonic  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "You  Come  Undone"  and  "Never  Too  Late".  8  out  of  10.

Question #1: For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Reply #1: Hi guys, Luca is talking. Well, Nuclear Detonation is a Thrash Metal band born in 2012 in Reggio Calabria (Italy), in a very similar ambient to the American Bay Area not for culture or what but just for the landscape (ahah joke). I’m the founder and the only original musician of the band, Filippo is the drummer and the older member who joined the band after me, and Andrea our bassist, is the latest and fantastic addition; we had a lot of line up change for a lot of reasons, and we’re still looking for a lead guitarist… Someone wants to try? (ahah joke)

Q#2:  How would you describe your musical sound?
R#2: We use to say that our sound is something reborn from 30 years ago to see the light and have a new kind of evolution; We have really different background:  I’m a Thrash Metal lover but I listen to a lot of Progressive Rock (Kansas is my favorite band), Filippo listen to a lot of Alternative Rock but he grew up with Heavy, Thrash and Death Metal, he love Richard Christy. Andrea listen and play Fusion, Jazz etc and his way to play metal is really influenced by that…He think that Steve Di Giorgio is the best bassist in metal, strange uh? (ahah joke)

Q#3: Your music is heavily rooted in the 80's thrash sound, what are some of the things you feel that you are doing different than most new bands that are playing this style?
R#3: As we said, we can for sure find our roots in 80’s Thrash sound and we’re proud of that; but after the recording of our first single “Down to Hell” our way to play our music is lightly more personal: we’re trying to play Thrash metal with our vision, we'd like to be remembered as a band which tried to escape to trend and conformity to play what really feel!

Q#4: What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
R#4: We like to talk about social disease and personal introspection, but, the human behavior is the central theme in our lyrics. Our debut album will clarify your ideas.

Q#5: What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name “Nuclear Detonation”?
R#5: Nuclear Detonation is something powerful and dangerous at the same time; something which could turn off many lives… And it could be caused by the man, because “the human mistake is behind the corner”. You’ll better understand why, listening to our debut album.

Q#6: What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
R#6: We played our best show some days ago in Cosenza, no doubt about it! Genuine atmosphere, nice place, very good organization (Thank you Marco and Gaetano) very good beer and…the guys from the crowd were animals: mosh all the time, broken glass, people almost flying (although the landing was not the best. ahah joke) and the thing that touched me most has been the circle pit attempt in a very little space!!! We’re were galvanized by all of them and we played our best show (even if we were without a guitar).

Q#7: Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
R#7: Well, we’re entering in the studio to record the album, so we maybe play some show, but we’ll think about a promo tour of the album after it’ll be out and available through our label “Senseless Life Records”.

Q#8: On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of thrash metal?
R#8: We’re very satisfied about the feedback gave to our music by fans of Thrash Metal. They've loved “Down to Hell” and someone says that he can’t still stop singing the chorus taaa taratara taratara tarata DOWN TO HELL!!! (ahah joke) But if they like “Down to Hell” they will be definitively in love with the Album!

Q#9: When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
R#9: The full length album will be out soon, we’ve all the songs, all the lyrics and we have it’s name! You don’t have to wait too long. Well, we see Nuclear Detonation playing its music as loud as fast as rude as possible and even more! We don’t like to say crap like “we’ll play at Sonisphere because we’re great”. We don’t need superstars, we need real music!

Q#10: What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
R#10: We use to listen to Megadeth, Metallica and Death when we’re all togheter in the car while moving to some show or just chilling somewhere. So I think that these bands are the main influences in our music. But as just said we have different backgrounds so everyone of us will be influenced by his own music.

Q#11: What are some of your non musical interests?
R#11: I (Luca) love sport. I was a good athlete, one of the best in my county in 110 meters hurdles before quitting for an injury and now I’m studying P.E. at university. Filippo was a sportman like me, he love football and athletics, now he’s working in his shop. Andrea, when is not playing bass or contrabass (most of his day because he study at Music Academy), he love to practice street skating.
Q#12: Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanatic Eyes/The Suffering Mechanisms/Thanotos Productions/2014 CD Review

  Thanatic  Eyes  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  melodic  form  of  thrash/groove  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "The  Suffering  Mechanisms"  which  was  released  by  Thanotos  Productions.

  A  very  melodic  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album before  adding  in  aggressive  screams  and  a  few  seconds  alter  melodic  solos  and  leads  become  a  part  of  the  music  along  with  a  great  amount  of  thrash  and  hardcore  influences  and  a  slight  doom  metal  element  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  main  ingredient  is  groove  metal.

  Clean  singing  is  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  they  also  add  in  a  good  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  in  their  heavy  sound  along  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times  and  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  acoustic  guitars  and  symphonic  sounds  are  brought  in  briefly  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction.

  The  music  utilizes  a  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast parts  along  with  some  of  the  alter  tracks  having  more  back  up  shouts  as  well  as  the  more  aggressive  screams  having  a  slight  death  metal  feeling  to  them  at  times  while  the  music  cannot  be  categorized  anywhere  close  to  that  genre  and  some  of  the  melodies  have  a  mainstream  rock  feeling  to  them  at  times.  

  Thanatic  Eyes  plays  a  very  modern  mixture  of  thrash  and  groove  metal  while  being  a  little bit  more  heavier  and  darker  than  most  bands  of  this  genre,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  hateful  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Thanatic  Eyes  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  thrash  and  groove  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Guilty"  "Dark  Santa  Klaus"  "Independent"  and  ...Before  you  Die".  8  out  of  10.  

Night By Night/NxN/Sun Hill Production/Cargo Records/2014 CD Review

  Night  By  Night  are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  mixture  of  melodic  hard  rock  and  pop  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "NxN"  which  will  be  released  in  July  as  a  joint  effort  between  Sun  Hill  Production  and  Cargo  Records.

  A  dark  and  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  more modern  rock/metal  direction  along  with  vocals  that  are  in  the  hair  metal  direction  while  also  having  a  more  melodic  singing  approach  and  the  music  combine s both  old  school  and  modern  day  hard  rock  together  along  with  some  heaviness  which  brings  the  metal  sound  to  the  album.    

  Guitar  solos  and  leads  are  all  in  the  melodic  mainstream  metal  direction  and  the  band  also  adds  in  a  great  amount  of  catchy  sounding  choruses  and  the  music  has  enough  diversity  to  appeal  to  fans  of  both  classic  and  modern  rock  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  after  a  few  hard  tracks  they  add  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  to  one  of  their  tunes  as  well  as bringing  in  a  couple  of   power  ballads.

  Night  By  Night  have  a  melodic  sound  that  would  appeal  to  fans  of  both  classic  and  modern  hard  rock  as  well  as  pop  metal  with  their  catchy  song  structures,  the  production  is  very  professional  sounding  and  the  lyrics  cover  everyday  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Night  By  Night  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  melodic  hard  rock  and  pop  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Time  To  Escape"  "Everywhere  Tonight"  "It's  No  Fath"  and  "Never  Die  Again".  8  out  of  10.  

Fallen Order Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We are from Wellington, New Zealand and have been around for nearly 10 years. Playing local shows all around New Zealand.

2>So far you have released a demo and an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about your musical sound? We play traditional/classic Heavy Metal, with a touch of Power and Thrash Metal. The songs we are writing at the moment are quite a bit heavier and more melodic than the songs on the current EP.

 

3.The band has been around since 2005 and so far has only released a demo and an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the gap between releases? The first couple of years Fallen Order had a different line up, Tooley and Ben are the only original members left. First Nick joined, then me and then Kieran. So once the current line up was completed, we tracked the drums and guitars for the EP. That was about 4-5 years. So the songs on the EP are quite old and slightly different to the style we are writing in atm. About 2-3 years ago we decided to down tune the guitars half a step, as I am a baritone and it makes things a lot more natural and easier to sing. So last year we re-tracked the guitars and bass and recorded vocals, all over the drum tracks we recorded 4-5 years ago. And that is the EP we have just released. We are now all focused and committed to the band, so there will definitely not be such a large gap between CDs in the future.

 

4.The music is heavily rooted in the original true style of metal, what was the decision behind going into this direction as opposed to a more modern style? Before I joined the band they were playing a more modern style of metal, But Tooley, Nick and Ben all wanted to play traditional heavy metal, along the lines of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. I was looking for a new band and was only interested in playing either traditional Heavy Metal or Power Metal. As those are the bands I love and grew up on.

 

5.The lyrics cover fantasy themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic? Yeah definitely, I read a lot of fantasy fiction books. Such authors as Raymond E Feist, David Gemmell, Mark Lawrence, David Eddings, Robert Jordan and George RR Martin. I started reading those types of books for lyrical ideas, as I find medieval fantasy very Heavy Metal. Steel swords, slaying your enemies and all of that!

 

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Fallen order'? Ben came up with the name. It is in regards to the tale of Satan being cast out of heaven along with his angels, and them being named the 'Fallen Order'

 

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance? We opened for Finnish folk Metal band Korpiklaani in Auckland, which was a great first show in the city. We have also played with Australian giants Vanishing Point and Lord, which were both great shows. Our live show is all about having fun and interacting with the crowd, getting them to sing along and chant the lyrics!

 

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future? Yes, we are planning a New Zealand tour later this year, to promote 'The Age of Kings'. We are also looking at hopefully heading over to Australia for some shows next year!

 

9.According to the Metal Archives page the band is signed to Stormspell Records but the ep was self released, when did the band sign the contract? We self released the EP in February, and after I gained us some airtime on a US radio station, Stormspell got in contact with us and asked if we would be interested in signing a deal to re-release the EP. So they will be releasing their own version of it worldwide, at the end of May.(Very Soon)

 

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of heavy metal?Its been great so far, we have had sales in NZ, Australia, Japan, USA, Germany, UK, Greece and more. And have set up our own distribution deals with companies from Japan(2), USA, Brazil, Greece and Germany(3). Plus we are happily surprised by the great reviews we have been getting. As I said earlier the songs were written 4-5 years ago, so we feel the songs we have written since then are much better. (In our opinion anyway)

 

11.Are any of the band members involved with any other musical projects these days?Kieran is the only one who is also in another band atm, Intergracia. A folk Metal band, also from Wellington.

 

12.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future? At the moment we have written nearly enough songs for a full release. So we need to decide whether we want to release one more EP and try and gain some big label interest, Or to release our debut album ourselves(Or if sales go well, with Stormspell Records possibly). It could be as early as next year sometime. Musically, since the EP we have become more heavier and melodic. The new songs are at least 6-7 minutes long and have more of a thrash/power Metal influence. But still contains key elements of traditional Heavy Metal.

 

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays? For me personally, Manowar have had a huge influence on me as a singer (Eric Adams, wow.) and also for lyrical content. The other band would be Iced Earth. (Matt Barlow, another huge influence and one of the only other baritone singers in Metal that I know of) Recently I have been listening to Ashes of Ares, Riot, Iron head, White Wizard, Crimson Glory, Rainbow etc..

 

14.What are some of your non musical interests? As I mentioned earlier, fantasy fiction books. Also video games on the Xbox or PC. I love my football and am a Manchester United supporter. Im sure there are other interests that are not coming to mind at the moment, but uh well.

Motorfire Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
We are a hard'n'heavy metal band from Slovenia. We play a mixture of 80's hard rock and traditional heavy metal. We started this band around 3 years ago mainly because we like playing and making music we like, and as you may noticed we really like old school hard rock and heavy metal.

2. Recently you have released your first full length album, can you tell us a little bit more about this musical genre?

Yes we had released our debut album on 12th of April via Metal Tank Records. Album has 11 tracks on it, from very fast songs, like Motorfire which is almost speed metal song, to more hard rock type of songs like Claws'n'Fangs, and there is even one power ballad on there.

3. The music on the album has a more hard rock approach to metal, what was the decision behind playing this style as opposed to the more extreme styles that a lot of younger bands usually go for?

We do not really like the way metal is evolving right now. Down-tuned guitars, growl vocals, etc. So we said why we or any other band, can’t play music our idols played back in the old times? So we decided to give it a try, and in process we’ve discovered that many young bands have chosen the same path as we did, and that there is strong fan base still supporting that kind of music.

4. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Our lyrics cover dark and everyday themes. Mainly about motorcycles and love, etc. You know the usual stuff. We weren't going to reinvent anything new.

5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Motorfire'?

When we were looking for a good band name, one of the guy just propose that we combine MOTORHEAD and BON FIRE, so it became MOTORFIRE.

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

We had some really big show like the Metal Camp festival 2012, and the trip to Belgium and show in JC Den Ast was a blast. Our appereance on the stage is energetic, especially the front-man who is jumping around like a 4-year old psychopath. Haha :)

7. Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

We are planning to have couple of show in Slovenia for summer time, and maybe some mini tour in Fall, but nothing certain yet.

8. A year ago you were a part of a German compilation called 'Steel held high', do you feel this album did a lot of help when it comes to getting

the bands music out there heard?

Yeah we obtained some new fans from Brazil and Europe (Belgium, Germany, etc.), and gained some good friends.

9. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of hard rock and heavy metal?

We had some really positive feedback of the new album, from foreign countries. Hope to tour them all.

10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We’ll stay on the path we’ve chosen, and making more old school heavy metal for all of you.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

As you may notice we’re very influenced by NWOBHM, and German heavy/speed/power metal, as also some of 80’s Hard Rock. The main bands that influences us are Iron Maiden, Helloween and Def Leppard.

12. What are some of your non musical interests?

We all have others hobbies beside making and playing music. Some of us like to do sport, some of us like to cook, and eat good food, others attend scouts, but we all like to party and have a really good time.
