Citizen Vicious/Loud, Mean Fast And Dirty/Hellstorm Records/2014 CD Review

  Citizen  Vicious  are  a  band  from  Canada  that  plays  a  mixture  of  thrash,  rock  and  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Loud,  Mean,  Fast  And  Dirty"  which  was  released  by  Hellstorm  Records.

  Motorcycle  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavy  thrash  metal  direction  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  along  with  some  aggressive  vocals  and  screams  which  also  leads  up  to  more  rock  orientated  guitar  solos  and  then  th e music  starts  mixing  thrash,  rock  and  punk  together.

  The  music  on  this  album  is  very  old  school  sounding  but  done  in  a  more  modern  fashion  having  a  sound  that  is  close  to  Motorhead  mixed  with  Minor  Threat  and  the  Supersuckers  as  well  as  having  elements  of  70's  classic  rock  and  they  always  mix  in  the  various  styles  with  the  heaviness  of  both  hardcore  and  thrash  and  the  last  track  is  a  cover  of  Steppenwolf's  "Born  To  Be  Wild"  which  also  has  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  elements  mixed  in with  the  growls.

  Citizen  Vicious  create  their  own  sound  with  this  album  that  they  call  thrash'n'roll  which  mixes  thrash,  hardcore,  rock  and punk  together  wit h  the music  being very  retro  yet  modern  at  the  same  time,  the  production  is  very  professional  sounding  and  the  lyrics  cover  drinking,  dark  and  everyday  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Citizen  Vicious  are  a  very  great  sounding  thrash'n'roll  band  and  if  you  are a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Shitfaced"  "The  Reaper"  "Welcome  To  Hell"  and  "Evil  Eyes".  8  out  of  10.

    

On Top/Top To Bottom/HPGD Productions/2014 EP Review

  On  Top  are  a  band  from  Pennsylvania  that  plays  a  mixture  of  hard  rock  and  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  ep  "Top  To  Bottom"  which  was  released  by  HPGD  Productions.

  Powerful  sounding  bass  lines  start  of  the  ep  before  going  into  a  melodic  hard  rock/metal  direction  along  with  some  vocals  that h ave  a  more  aggressive  bite  than  the  guitars  and  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  added  in  at  times,  the  music  on  the  ep  has  a  mixture  of  70's  and  80's  metal  in  the  sound  but  with  a  different  vocal  approach.

  On  the  other  tracks  the  band  continues  their  mixture  of  hard  rock  and  metal  with  some  of  the  music  having  a  mid  80's  to  early  90's  hair  metal  vibe  but  without  the  power  ballads  and  the  sound  reminds  me  of  the  last  years  of  that  genre  before  grunge  took  over  and  the  band  also  utilizes  back  up  vocals  at  times  and  on  of  the  tracks  has  a  sound  that  reminds  me  of  a  cross  between  Rage  Against  The  Machine  and  pop  metal.

  On  Top  update  the  more  hard  rock  orientated  side  of  metal  with  their  music  while  also  having  an  old  school  and  retro  vibe  throughout  the  tracks,  the  production  is  very  professional  sounding  and  the  lyrics  cover  everyday  themes.

  In  my  opinion  On  Top  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  hard  rock  and  heavy  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "No  Shame"  and  "Dont  Go".  8  out  of  10.      

  

Tyranny Is Tyranny/Let It Come From Whom It May/Phratry Records./2014 CD Review

  Tyranny  Is  Tyranny  are  a  band  from  Madison,  Wisconsin  that  plays  a  mixture  of  noise  rock  and  post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Let  It  Come  From  Whom  it  May"  which  was  released  by  Phraty  Records.

  A  clean  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  which  also  starts  getting  a  bit  heavier  after  a  few  seconds  later  along  with  vocals  that  are  aggressive  while  also  having  a  sense  of  melody  to  them  and  then  the  music  starts  mixing  post  metal  and  noise  rock  together  as  well  as  adding  in  a  few  screams.

  A  melodic  post  hardcore  sound  is  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  on  certain  songs  clean  guitars  are  added into  the  music  and  they  enhance  the  post  rock  element s of  the  recording  as  well  as  adding  in  a  more  dark  and  melancholic  feeling  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  you  can  hear  regular  style  singing  at  times.

  A  few  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  they  also  add  in  small  amounts  of  melodic  guitar  leads  and  hardcore  style  shouts  and  they  also  bring  in  a  track  that  has  an  experimental  noise  feeling  but  with  more  guitar  work  being  utilized  before  returning  back  to  a  normal  sound  on  the  alter  tracks.

  Tyranny  Is  Tyranny  create  a  sound  that  combine s hardcore,  noise  rock  and  post  metal  together  as  well  as  having  a  good  balance  between  darkness,  emotion,  heaviness  and  melody,  the production  is  very  dark  yet  professional  sounding  and  the  lyrics  cover  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Tyranny  Is  Tyranny  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  noise  rock,  hardcore  and  post  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Manufacturing  Truth"  "The  Haze  of  Childhood"  and  "The  American  Dream  is  A  Lie".  8  out  of  10.    

 

Henric Blomqvist & Friends/All Of Your Illusions/Inverse Records/2014 CD Review

 
  Henric  Blomqvist  is  a  guitarist  from  Finland  that  plays  a  guitar  orientated  form  of  rock  music  which  also  combines  influences  from  both  classic  rock  and  heavy  metal  and  he  also  teams  up  with  some  very well  known  musicians  on  this  recording  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2014  album  "All  Of  Your  Illusions"  which  was  released  by  inverse  Records.

  Synths  start  off  the  album  bringing  in  some  darkness  before  adding  in  melodic  guitar  leads  which  then  take  the  music  into  a  more  classic  rock  orientated  form  of  metal  sound  along  with  some  psychedelic  sounds  and  melodic  vocals  and  there  are  also  great  amounts  of  prog  elements  being  utilized  in  the  music.

  On  some  of  the  later  tracks  acoustic  guitars  are  brought  in  along  with  some  old  school  power  ballads  which  would  be  perfectly  suited  for  airplay  on  classic  rock  stations  but  having  a  more  psych  and  metal  feeling  to  them  and  the  guitar  player  shows  he  has  a  great  amount  of  talent  and  skill  throughout  the  album  having  a  great  amount  of  creative  sounding  guitar  solos  and  leads.

  As  the  album  progresses  the  music  brings  in  a  mixture  of  both  power  ballads  and  hard  tracks  as  well  as  adding  a  bit  of  hair  metal  in  the  sound  but  in  a  more  psychedelic  fashion  and  there  is  a  great  amount  of  diversity  throughout  the  songs  as  well  as  a  lot  of  catchy  structures  being  added into  the  music.

  Henric  Blomqvist  brings  in  a  very  retro  and  classic  rock  sound  with  his  musical style  as  well  as  adding  in  some  of  the  heaviness  of  commercial  metal  of  the  80's   in  his  sound,  the  production  is  very  professional  sounding  and  the  lyrics  cover  everyday  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Henric  Blomgvist  is  a  very  great  sounding  classic  rock/metal  guitarist  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.   RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Place  Of  Fear"  "Black  Sky"  "When  We  Where  Young"  and  "All  of  Your  Illusions".  8  out  of  10.  

Fallen Order/The Age Of Kings/2014 EP Review

  Fallen  Order  are  a  band  from  New  Zealand  that  plays  a  very  traditional  form  of  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  ep  "The  Age  Of  Kings".

  A  very  old  school  Iron  Maiden  style  guitar  lead  and  powerful  bass  line s start  off  the  recording  before  adding  in  heavier  guitar  riffs  and  then  the  music  starts  going  for  more  of  a  1980  metal  sound  along  with  some  melodic  vocals  that  also  have  elements  of  power  metal  and  they  also  add  in  back  up  gang  shouts.

  The  songs  on  the  ep  are  very  old  school  sounding  going  for  the  true  heavy  metal  sound  which  existed  before  genres  such  as  speed,  power  or  thrash  metal  and  your  can  hear  a lot of  NWOBHM  elements in  their  sound  and  some  of  the  tracks  also  have  a  hard  rock  feeling  to  them  at  times  and  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars  are  utilized  on  the  last  track  which  gives  the  recording  an  epic  feeling.  

  Fallen  order  stick  to  a  very  old  school  and  traditional  metal  style  with  the   music  sounding  so  ancient  that  if  you  played  this  for  anybody  that  has  never  heard  this  band  the y would  all  think  this  is  a  metal  record  from  the  early  80's,  the  production  is  very  old  school  sounding  and  the  lyrics  cover  medieval  fantasy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Fallen  Order  are  a  very  great  sounding old  school  heavy  metal b and  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Stand  Together"  and  "The Age  Of  Kings".  8/5  out  of  10.      

Beyond Violet/Frozen Words/Ravenheart Music/2014 Ep Review

  Beyond  Violet  are  a  band  from the Netherlands  that  plays  a  melodic  form  of  gothic  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  ep  "Frozen  Words"  which  was  released  by  Ravenheart  Music.

  Tribal  style  drums  start  offf  the  ep  being  the  vocals  and  melodic  guitars  kick  in  along  with  some  symphonic  elements  and  the  music  starts  combing  gothic  rock  and  metal  together  along  with  traces  of  pop  orientated  music  and  you  can  also  hear  a  lot  of  symphonic  and  atmospheric  sounds  in  their  musical  style.

  The  band  sticks  to  a  symphonic  metal  direction  on  the  other  tracks  while  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  gothic  and  pop  rock  elements  into  their  sound  to  make  their  music  sound  very  catchy  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  on  some  of  the  alter  tracks  the  band  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  guitar  leads  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  progressive  rock  traces.

  Beyond  Violet  play  a  catchy  form  of  symphonic/gothic  metal  with  a  more  pop  rock  style  and  while  there  is  nothing  original  about  their  music  the  songs  are  still  very  well  put  together,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  sounding  and  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Beyond  violent  are  a  very  decent  sounding  symphonic/gothic  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Frozen  Words"  and  "Deceit".  7/5  out  of  10.

Nota Amara/At The Line/2014 CD Review

  Nota  Amara  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  progressive  and  symphonic  form  of  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2014  album  "At  The  Line".

  Symphonic  keyboards  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic  guitar  leads  and  a  few  seconds  later  operatic  female  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  some  classical  guitars  and  spoken  word  samples  which  then  leads  to  a  heavier  direction  as  well  as  the  bands  progressive  metal  sound  kicking  in.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  album  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  also  adds  in  a  good  amount  of  70's  progressive  rock  elements  into  their  musical  style  and  the band  also  brings  in  a  few  long  and  epic  in  length  tracks  and  the  prog  metal  elements  in  the  music  combine  both  the  modern  and  old  school  forms  of  the  genre  together  as  well  as  adding  psychedelic  sounds  into  the  keyboards  at  times  which  brign  a  mid  60's  to  early  70's  rock  feeling  to  the  album.

  A  good  portion  of  the  songs  have  an  opera  rock  and  gothic  metal  feeling  to them  at  times  while  the  music  is  a  lot  more  closer  to  progressive  rock/metal  than  those  genres  and  some  of  the  alter  tracks  have  a  more  dark and  poetic  feeling  to  them  as  well  as  the  music  being  very  diverse,  symphonic  and  heavy  all  at  the  same  time  and  you  can  also  hear  traces  of  thrash  and  speed  metal  in  one  of  the  genre  along  with  some  aggressive  drums  that  go  close  to  the  blast  blast  area  before  returning  back  to  a  prog  metal  direction  and  some  of  the  later  tracks  include  male  vocals.

  Nota  Arma  show  a  lot  of  diversity  and  originality  with  their  music  basing  their  music  in  progressive  metal  but  adding  in  symphonic,  gothic,  opera  and  classical  elements  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  is  very  professional  sounding  and  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  poetic  themes  with  some  lyrics  being  based  on  Goethe's  Faust.

  In  my  opinion  Nota  Amara  are  a  very  great  sounding  symphonic  progressive  metal b and  and  if  you , are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dorian"  "Beatrice"  "Faust"  and  "The  Dark  Tower".  8  out  of  10.
