Poobah/U.S Rock/Ripple Music/2014 CD Re-Issue Review

  Poobah  where  a  band  from  Wisconsin  that  played  a  mixture  of  early  heavy  metal  and  psychedelic  rock and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1976  album  "U.S  Rock"  which  will  be  re-issued  this  month  by  Ripple  Music.

  The  album  starts  out  with  an  early  metal  sound  along  with  hard  rock  solos  and  melodic  vocals  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  after  awhile  psychedelic  elements  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  high  pitched  screams  which  where  the  roots  of  power  metal.

  As  the  album  continues  it  sticks  to  a  psychedelic  rock  sound  while  being  as  heavy  as  early  and  proto  metal  as  well  as  bringing  in  elements  that  would  later  evolve  into  stoner  rock  and  one  song  they  bring  in  a  piano  which  also  gives  the  recording  and  early  rock'n'roll  feeling  and  on  other  songs  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  being  utilized.

  When  we  get  more  into  the  album  the  band  starts  bringing  in    power  ballad's  before  returning  to  a  more  heavy  psychedelic  hard  rock  sound  and  on  one  song  they  bring  in  synths  and  then  go  into  a  more  metal  direction  and  the  last  song  is  a  live  track  which  also  utilizes  a  brief  use  of  drum  solos.

  With  this  album  Poobah  combined  the  earliest  form  with  both  hard  and  psychedelic  along  with  a  great  amount  of  melody  to  create  a  classic  recording  which  was  underrated  for  its  time  and  forgotten  about.

  Song  lyrics  cover  everyday  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  for  the  time  it  was  recorded  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  album  as  well  as  some  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Poobah  where  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  early  70's  metal  and  psychedelic  hard  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Flesh  Eaters"  "Crazy"  "Cold  Blooded  Lover"  adn  "Enjoy  What  You  have".  8/5  out  of  10.    

Leaf Hound/Live In Japan/Ripple Music/2014 Live CD Re-Issue

  Leaf  Hound  where  a  band  from  England  that  played  an  early  form  of  metal  with  hard  rock  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1971  live  album  "Live  in  Japan"  which  was  re-issued  by  Ripple  Music  during  the  year  of  2014.

  The  album  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  and  melodic  proto  metal  sound  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments sounding  very  powerful  as  well  as  some  clean  signing  vocals  and  after  awhile  solos  are  added  into  the  music.

  As  the  album  continues  the  band  continues  their  hard  rock/proto  metal  sound  and  you  can  really  hear  the  roots  of  stoner  rock  in  this  recording  and  after  awhile  acoustic  guitars  are  added into  the  music  briefly  before  returning  to  a  heavier  direction  as  well  as  mixing  in  clean  parts  at  times.

  With  this  album  Leaf  Hound  while  mostly  coming  from  a  blues/hard  rock  direction  bring  a  heaviness  to  the  music  which  was  the  origins of  metal  and  eventually  stoner  rock  20  years  later  and  it  is  good  to  hear  70s  music  that  is  never  played  on  the  classic  rock  stations.  

  Song  lyrics  cover  everyday  themes  along  with  a  touch  of  darkness,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  for  the  time  it  was  released  and  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  as  well  as  some  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Leaf  Hound  where  a  very  great  sounding  hard  rock/proto  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  live  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Barricades"  "With  A  Minute  To  Go"  and  "Evil".  8  out  of  10.   

Thalion/Dawn Of Chaos/Maple Metal Records/2013 CD Review

  Thalion  are  a  band  from  Canada  that  plays  a  very  heavy  and  melodic  form  of  power  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Dawn  Of  Chaos"  which  was  released  by  Maple  metal  Records.

  The  album  starts out  with  a  very  heavy  and  melodic  power  metal  sound  along  with  solos  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  which  also  leads  up  to  clean  singing  vocals  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  more  modern  day  heaviness  to  an  old  school  form  of  metal.

  As  the  album  progresses  the  music  brings  in  a  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  always  remaining  melodic  and  dark  all  at  the  same  time  and  after  awhile  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  spoken  word  parts  are  added  into  the  music  and  they  bring  and  epic  feeling  to  the  recording  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Later  on  symphonic  elements  are  brought  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  along  with  a  small  amount  of  aggressive  vocals  as  well  as  the  band  combining  the  old  school  power  metal  sound  with  the  heaviness  of  modern  metal  and  they  also  bring  in  a  power  ballad  before  going  back  to  a  heavier  direction.

  With  this  album  Thalion  take  the  melodic  sound  of  old  school  German  power  metal  and  mix  it  in  with  the  heaviness  of  the  more  modern  metal  sounds  to  create  a  power  metal  album  that  really  stands  out  and  not  typical  for  this  genre.

  Song  lyrics  cover  darkness,  fantasy,  mythology  and  heavy  metal  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  as  well  as  some  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Thalion  are  a  very  great  sounding  heavy,  modern  day  power  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Another  Day"  "Nameless  Pharaoh"  "Lord  of  Metal"  and  "The  Valley  Of  The  Damned".  8/5  out  of  10.      

Tothem/Beyond The Sea/Maple Metal Records/2013 CD Review

  Tothem  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  very  melodic  and  symphonic  form  of  gothic  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Beyond  The  Sea"  which  was  released  by Maple  metal  Records.

  The  album  starts out  with  drum  beats  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  leads  up  to  melodic  vocals  and  electronic  music  sounds  which  leads  to  a  more  gothic  metal  direction  and  after  a  while  spoken  word  samples  and  prog  sounds  are  added  into  the  music.

  When  the  album  goes  into  the  next  song  keyboards  are  added  into  the  music  and  become  a  part  of  the  music  along  with  the  heavier  sounds  and  at  times  more  aggressive  sounding  vocals  are  utilized  as  well  as  the  band  bringing  a  lot  more  melody  into  the  musical  instruments  and  after  awhile  symphonic  elements  are  brought  into  the  music  along  with  some  power  ballads  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  

  As  the  album  progresses  clean  parts  start  getting  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  parts  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  male  vocals  being  added  in  at  times  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  more  traditional  sounding  80's  gothic  rock  influences  and  on  some  songs  acoustic  guitars  make  their  way onto  the  record.  

  With  this  album  Tothem  take  the  modern  day  gothic  metal  sound  and  bring  back  elements  of  traditional  goth  music  as  well  as  symphonic  metal  influences  to  create  a  truly  heavy,  dark  and  melancholic  sounding  album.

  Song  lyrics  cover  dark,  depressive  and  witchcraft  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

  In  my  opinion  Tothem  are  a  very  great  sounding  melodic,  symphonic  gothic  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Run  To  You"  "Light  Of  Soul"  "The  Witch"  adn  "Where  the  Angels  Lie".  8/5  out  of  10.        

Fugazi/Repeater/Dischord Records/1990 CD Review

  Fugazi  are  a  band  from  Washington  D.C  that  plays  a  melodic  form  of  post  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1990  album  "Repeater"  which  was  released  by  Dischord  Records.

  The  album  starts  out  with  some  semi  soft  distorted  sounds  before  all  of  the  other  musical  instruments  start  to  kick  in  as  well  as  adding  in  a  more  heavy  and  melodic  sound  along  with  vocals  and  then  the  music  takes  on  a  more  noisy  yet  melodic  post  punk  rock  sound.

  As  the  album  progresses  the  music  starts  alternating  between  clean  and  heavy  parts  as  well  as  bringing  in  guitar  leads  and  melodic  clean  singing  vocals  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  music  starts  to  mostly  a  slow  to  mid  paced  direction.

  With  this  album  Fugazi  showed  that  you  can  still  be  low  and  melodic  yet  angry  and  heavy  all  at  the  same  time  and  while  the  music  was  not  as  aggressive  or  fast  sounding  like  Minor  threat  there  was  still  a  lot  of  anger  and  emotion  being  utilized  on  this  record.

  Song  lyrics  cover  angry,  emotional  and  everyday  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  for  the  time  it  was  released  and  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  a  very  great  sounding  recording  from  Fugazi  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  probably  already  own  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Repeater"  "Greed"  "Shut  the  Door"  and  "Break  IN".  8  out  of  10.

NOFX/Punk In Drubic/Epitaph Records/1994 CD Review

  NOFX  are  a  band  from  Los  Angeles,  California  that  plays  a  mixture  of  punk rock,  melodic  hardcore  and  ska  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1994  album  "Punk  In  Drubic"  which  was  released  by  Epitaph  Records.

  The  album  starts  out  with  a  heavy  and  melodic  punk  sound  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  clean  singing  vocals  and  after  awhile  solos  are  added  into  the  music

  As  the  album  continues  it  continues  its  melodic  punk  sound  along  with  a  mixture  of  slow  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  bringing  in  elements  of  hardcore  and  after  awhile  ska  sounds  make  their  way  onto  the  album  along  wit h a  brief  use  of  clean  guitars  but  the  band  also  does  make  a  return  to  a  faster  sound.

  While  i  was  never  a  huge  fan  of  this  genre,  I  always  felt  NOFX  where  one  of  the  better  bands  for  this  style  of  music  and  the  way  they  added  a  little  bit  of  hardcore  to  this  style  made  them  stand  out  a  bit.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  a  very  decent  sounding album  from  NOFX  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  probably  already  own  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Leave  It  Alone"  "The  Cause"  "Lori  Myers"  and  "Punk  Guy".  7/5  out  of  10.

The Socks/Self Titled/Small Stone Recordings/2014 CD Review

  The  Socks  are  a  band  from  France  that  plays  a  very  psychedelic  sounding  form  of  stoner  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2014  album  which  was  released  by  Small  Stone  Recordings.

  The  album  starts  out  with  psychedelic  sound effects  before  adding  in  a  heavy  70's  rock  sound  along  with  melodic  vocals  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  adding  in  classic  rock  style  solos  which  also  leads  to  more  metal  influences  being  added  in.

  As  the  album  continues  it  sticks  to  more  of  a  70s  metal/rock  sound  while  also  bringing  in  grunge  and  stoner  rock  elements  to update  the  music  for  2014  as  well  as  bringing  in  60's  psychedelic  influences  as  well  as  a  great  amount  of  fuzzy  sounding  guitar  solos  and  leads  which  also  leads  yp  to  traces  of  doom  metal  when  it  comes  to  the  heavier  sections  of  their  music  as  well  as  the  singer  having  a  similar  sound  to  the  singer  of  'Trouble'.

  With  this  album  The  Socks  show  they  know  the  roots  of  60s  and  70s  rock  very  well  with  their  psychedelic  elements  sounding  like  the  originals  while  also  having  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  as  well  as  the  catchy  structures  of  90's  grunge.

  Song  lyrics  cover  dark  and  metaphysical  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

   In  my  opinion  The  Socks  are  a  very  great  sounding  psychedelic  rock  band  with  the  heaviness  of  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Some  Kind  of  Sorcery"  "Holy  Sons"  "Gypsy  lady"  adn  "The  last  Dragon".  8  out  of  10.
