Merzbow/Venereology/Release Records/1995 CD Review

  Merzbow  are  a  1  man  band  from  Japan  that  has  a  long  history  going  back  to  the  mid  70's  and are  one  of  the  creators  of  the  harsh  noise  genre  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  1995  album  "Venereology"  which  was  released  by  Release  Records.

  Noise  effects  from   from  avant  garde  sounding  noises    to  very  harsh  power  electronics  mixed  in  with  some  heavy  distortion  coming  from  guitar  amplifiers,  while  the  vocals  are  all  high  pitched  noise  screams.

  Song  themes  cover  darkness  with  a  touch  of  Japenese  Mytholgy,  while  the  production  has  a  very dark,  heavy,  raw  and primitive  sound  to  it  with  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length  and  if  you turn  up  the  volume  loud  enough  you  could  experience  hearing  loss.

  In  my  opinion  Merzbow  are  a  great  sounding  brutal  harsh  noise  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Klo Klen  Phantisie"  and  "Slave  New  Desart".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

ASIDEFROMADAY/Chasing Shadows/Division Records/2012 CD Review

  ASIDEFROMADAY  are  a  band  from  France  that  mixes  sludge  and  doom  metal  with  post  metal  and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Chasing  Shadows"  which  was  released  by  Division  Records.

  Drums  are  all  slow  playing  with  no  fast  drumming  or  blast  beats  being  present  on  this  recording,  while  the  keyboards  bring  a  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  to  the  music  with  some  drones  being  utilized  at  times,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  at  times  they  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Rhythm  guitars  are  all  slow  and  heavy  riffs  that  combine  sludge  and  doom  with  post  metal  and  hardcore  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  soft  and  clean  playing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording.

  Vocals  are  all  sludge/hardcore  style  screams  with  some  spoken  word  parts  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  ASIDEFROMADAY  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  sludge,  doom,  hardcore  and  post  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Death,  Ruins  And  Corpses"  "Black  Sun"  and  "Chasing  Shadows".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Ufomammut/Oro: Opus Alter/Neurot Recordings/2012 CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  the  second  album  in  a  series  by  Ufomammut  continuing  the  occult  psychedelic  drone/sludge  doom  metal  sound  of  the  previous  effort  called  "Oro:  Opus  Alter"  which  was  released  by  Neurot  Recordings.

  Drums  are  all  slow  playing  with  no  fast  drumming  or  blast  beats,  while  the  synths  and  sound  effects  bring  a  ver  occult,  psychedelic,  experimental  and  drone  sound  to  the  music,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  are  all  slow  riffs  that  combine  the  heaviest  elements  of  sludge,  drone,  psychedelic  and  doom  metal  along  with  a  great  amount  of  heavy  distortion  being  behind  the  riffing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording.

  Vocals  are  all  sludge  style  screams  with  some  clean  singing and  spoken  word  parts,  while  the  song  themes  continue  with  the  Occult  and  Alchemy  themes  of  the  previous  effort,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy,  dark  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ufomaamut  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  heavy  psychedelic  drone/doom  sludge  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Oroborus"  and  "Sublime".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

  U.S  Christmas  are  a  band  from  North  Carolina  that  plays  a  mixture  of  psychedelic,  folk,  drone,  sludge  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Bad  Heart  Bull"  which  was  released  by  Play  The  Assassin.

  Drums  are  all  slow  playing  with  no  fast  drumming  and  blast  beats  along  with  some  percussion,  while  the  sound  effects  and  violins  bring in  elements  of  drone  and  folk  music  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  are  all  slow  and  heavy  riffs  that  combine  sludge  and  doom  metal  to c reate  a  sound  of  their  own  along  with  a  great  amount  of  heavy  distortion,  while  the  lead  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  are  blues  rock  sounding  guitar  solos  and  leads  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  they  use  finger  picking  and  full  chords  to  bring  a  psychedelic  folk  music  sound  to  the  recording.

  Vocals  are  all  sludge  style  screams  and  clean  singing  doom  metal  vocals,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  dark  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  U.S  Christmas  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  doom  metal,  sludge,  psychedelic  and  folk  music  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "New  War"  "Black  Snake"  and  "Lazarus".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

  Taurus  are  a  band  from  Portland,  Oregon  that  plays  a  very  psychedelic  form  of  sludge/doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2012  album  "Life".

  Drums  are  all  slow  to  mid  paced  playing  with  no  fast  drumming  or  blast  beats,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  riffs  that  combine  psychedelic,  sludge  and  doom  metal  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  with  a  good  amount  of  heavy  distortion  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on t his  recording.

  Vocals  are  mostly  clean  singing  chanting  along  with  some  spoken  word  samples  and  sludge style  screams,  while  the  song  themes  cover  life  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording,  in  addition  the  2  songs  are  long  and  epic in  length.
