Soon are a band from North Carolina that plays an atmospheric mixture of folk and doom metal and this is a review of their 2016 album "Vol. 1" which was released by Temple Of Torturous.
Drones start off the album along with some avant garde elements before going into a heavier doom metal direction and a few seconds later melodic vocals and clean playing are added onto the recording along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them and acoustic guitars can also be heard at times.
When solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion and you can also hear a lot of 70's influences in the songs while the music still sounds very modern and elements of alternative can also be heard at times and as the album progresses influences of psychedelic and folk music are added onto the recording and there is also a brief use of tribal style beats and a later track also brings in a small amount of violins while a couple of songs are very long and epic in length and the whole album also sticks to a very slow musical direction from beginning to ending of the recording.
Soon plays a musical style that takes post, atmospheric and psychedelic rock and mixes it in with elements of folk and also brings in the heaviness of doom metal to create a musical style of their own, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark themes.
In my opinion Soon are a very great sounding mixture of indie rock, folk and doom metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Burning Wood" "Glass Hours" and "Datura Stramonium". 8 out of 10.
